I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 78

At the time, she felt an assistant's salary couldn't compete with her commissions in marketing, so she politely declined.

But now, she was utterly disgusted with a job that forced her to cater to impossible, toxic clients. She would gladly run to an investment firm and bury herself in spreadsheets and financial reports. Plus, her college major was international finance. This was the perfect chance to reclaim her original career path.

The conversation with Lydia flowed effortlessly, dragging on until past nine o'clock. Gavin was waiting for her on the other side of the restaurant.

Gavin walked her to the elevator, and she gently gave him a playful shove. "Go home already."

She was worried that if they lingered any longer, Gavin would end up dragging her back to his place again.

Once the floodgates of intimacy had been opened, the craving was insatiable. They were completely addicted to each other.

Inside the elevator, Sophie dug out her keys, feeling lighter than she had in days.

Her mother had never liked her working in marketing. Every time she came home from entertaining clients reeking of alcohol, her mother's brow would furrow in deep disapproval.

If Sarah knew she was planning to return to the financial sector, she would be absolutely thrilled.

Over the last couple of days, her mother had been sick with worry, constantly terrified she would be attacked again.

She just wanted to run inside and share the good news, to finally give her mom some peace of mind.

Just as she turned the key in the lock, she heard her mother sobbing from inside the apartment.

"Get out! Get the hell out of here!"

Sophie's heart dropped like a stone. She shoved the door open violently. Standing in their small entryway was a man. He turned around, and she instantly recognized him. It was Harold Harper.

Pure, unadulterated rage exploded in Sophie's chest. Harassing her was one thing, but tracking down her home and terrorizing her mother was a line they would never cross.

Sophie hoisted her heavy leather bag and hurled it straight at Harold's chest. "Are you psychos ever going to stop?! Get the hell out, or I'm calling the cops!"

Sarah immediately shoved Harold toward the door, her voice trembling as she screamed, "Leave!"

The second the door slammed shut, Sarah collapsed onto the hard floor, clearly pushed past her breaking point by sheer terror.

"Mom! Don't scare me like this." Sophie scrambled to the floor, wrapping her arms around her mother and carefully lifting her onto the couch.

"Mom, I am so sorry. I never imagined this family would be this unhinged. He showed up at my office, and now he tracked us down here."

Sarah clutched her chest, her breathing ragged and shallow. "Sophie, just sign the paper. Make them leave. Tell them to go away."

"Why should we let them bully us like this? I stepped back, I compromised, and they still keep pushing. What more do they want?!"

Sophie couldn't swallow this level of blatant injustice.

"Sophie, I'm begging you. I just want us to live our lives in peace. We can't afford to provoke people like them. Sign the paper, tell them to leave the city, and promise me you will never see that Luke Lawrence again. Cut every single tie to that family."

Sarah's face was chalk-white, the color completely drained from her lips. Just forcing out that single paragraph left her gasping for air.

Panicked, Sophie quickly poured her a glass of water, gently rubbing her back to soothe her ragged breathing.
