Chapter 14
Eleanor’s heart leaped. Success!
She melted against him, tilting her face up, lips seeking his.
Seth recoiled as if burned.
“Eleanor?!”
Disappointment, sharp and cold, flooded his eyes.
“How?!” Eleanor gasped, stunned.
She’d mimicked everything – the hair, the posture, the dim light! How could he tell? “How did you know?”
“No man mistakes another woman for his wife,” Seth stated, his voice like ice.
“Eleanor, I believed you’d moved on. That’s why the children stayed. Clearly, I was wrong. We are done. No contact. I won’t risk Fiona misunderstanding. Leave. Now.”
He turned towards the stairs.
Eleanor knew his resolve was granite. But she couldn’t give up. She lunged, grabbing his arm-
“Mr. Sterling! SIR!”
A maid hurtled into the foyer, face white with panic.
“The children! They collapsed! Ambulance took them… to the hospital! ICU!”
Seth’s heart plummeted. He whirled on Eleanor. “What happened?!”
“I don’t know!” Eleanor’s denial was instant, frantic. “I wasn’t home! It’s nothing to do with me!”
Seth’s jaw clenched. He grabbed her arm, dragging her towards the car.
Maybe the kids would want her there when they woke up.
At the hospital, the stark reality hit: Intensive Care Unit.
How could it be this bad?
The doctor’s face was stern, accusatory. “What kind of parents are you? Alcohol? Daily? In children that young? Irreversible damage to kidneys. liver, brain development. This could be fatal.”
Seth felt the words like physical blows. He turned on Eleanor, eyes blazing red.
“You gave them alcohol?! HOW DARE YOU!”
“I DIDN’T!”
Eleanor shrieked, hands up in defense.
