Chapter 4
Back at the hotel, I booked a flight home for the next day.
Right before bed, I scrolled through social media-
Johnson had just posted something.
A photo of him at a theme park with Jace… and her-
That same girl from the wedding.
Jace was snuggled up against Johnson,
sharing a Neapolitan ice cream cone with her like they were a family.
The caption read: “Looks like someone’s ready for a new mommy.”
There weren’t any likes on the post. Not one.
I knew right away-
This was meant for me.
Set to “Only visible to Scarlett.”
He always did this.
Every time we fought, he’d post something about Jace.
A subtle warning: “Bow down if you want to see your kid.”
And every time, I gave in-
Tossed my pride at his feet and let him stomp all over it.
Looking back now,
The second I almost died giving birth, he had me by the throat.
But not anymore.
I gave the post a “like,”
then put my phone down and went to sleep.
Around midnight, his call woke me.
“Scarlett, what the hell is wrong with you as a mother?”
“Do you even care Jace waited for you all day?”
“He’s still crying!”

I rubbed my eyes and answered like I was half-asleep.
“Oh. Tell him I’m sorry, will you?”
There was silence on the other end-just two seconds.
Then Johnson’s voice came back, low and cold.
“Scarlett, don’t test me.”
You know I can make sure you never see jace again.”
There it was.
The old threat, the same leverage.
But I wasn’t that Scarlett anymore.
“Go ahead.”
I stared at the ceiling, voice steady.
He choked for a moment, caught off guard.
What did you just say?”
I sat up, my hair brushing the hotel comforter.
“I said, go ahead.”
“You’re his dad. Do whatever you want.”
Through the phone, I heard something crash-glass shattering hard.
“You have one more chance, Scarlett.”
Take it back or I’ll take Jace overseas tomorrow.”
“You’ll never find him.”
I closed the call.
Opened my photo gallery.
213 videos.
Over a thousand pictures.
I’d watched them all more times than I could count.
I took a long breath-
And deleted everything.
Suddenly, I didn’t feel like waiting until tomorrow.

Chapter 4
“Hey, Johnson,” I said quietly,
“we were never actually married… were we?”
The line went dead silent.
I looked down, calm now.
“No marriage license means no divorce.”
“We’re done.”
I hung up.
A second later-
Someone banged hard on the hotel door.
