Chapter 12 The Words That Cut Her Deep

Orion’s eyesso much like Nevin’sgrew misty as he glared at Demi.

His mom hadn’t checked on him all night. She wouldn’t even make the corn chowder he asked for.

And now, she didn’t care about his injury at all? Was she blaming him for being spoiled?

His leg hurt a lot. Why couldn’t he stay in the hospital?

All his longing for Demi turned into anger.

I don’t need you anyway! Dad and Rhea are taking care of me!He snapped.

Demi’s face stayed calm, showing no emotion.

Usually, whenever he mentioned Rhea’s name, his mom’s eyes would change, even if just a little.

But now, there was nothing.

That hurt him more than he could explain. He pouted and complained, I got hurt, and you didn’t even come see me. What kind of mom are you?

Haha!

Demi let out a cold laugh. Even the way Orion spoke carried the same entitled tone as Nevin.

So what? Being a mother meant she owed them everything?

She brushed past Orion, ready to walk away.

But Orion’s voice cracked as he shouted, You’re not allowed to go! Mom, don’t go!

Demi didn’t even slow down. She kept walking until she lifted her head and came facetoface with Nevin and the others.

Nevin’s dark eyes flashed with anger. He scooped up the crying boy and glared at her, his voice cold as ice. Demi, how can you be this heartless?

Yeah, Demi,Rhea said softly, standing right beside him, her face full of fake sympathy. How did Orion wrong you for you to treat him like this?

Nevin held Orion tightly; Rhea stood close byone on each side of him. Together, the three of them. looked like the perfect family.

Demi noticed the little performance. She saw right through Rhea’s act, but she no longer cared.

Rhea turned to her again, her tone sweet but sharp.

Even if Orion made a mistake, he’s just a kid. He doesn’t know better. And as his mother, isn’t it your job to forgive him?

Orion pouted, his chest tight with frustration. He already felt wronged. When Rhea defended him, the boy felt even worse.

Rhea was right. He hadn’t done anything bad. He just liked playing with her more. It was his mom who was petty and vented out her rage on him.

Rhea shed a few tears when she saw Orion was crying.

She gently wiped her cheeks and whispered, Demi, how could you be so cruel?

And just like that, Rhea stood united with Nevin. Three against one. Each of them glaring at Demi as if she were the only villain in the room.

Demi let out a selfmocking smile. If you two weren’t cruel, how did you let a kid run wild in the hospital hallway?

If she hadn’t stepped out of the elevator, Orion might’ve already taken the elevator and gone somewhere.

She was ready to leave, but a nurse rushed over from the hallway.

Ms. Snow, your prescription.”

A halffull plastic bag dangled in her hand, and it was clearly not for a cold.

Nevin’s eyes narrowed. He set Orion down and took a step toward her. His voice was low and hoarse. You’re sick?

Demi didn’t want to respond, but she knew he’d probably go ask the doctor if she stayed quiet. She lifted her eyes, her tone sharp.

Yeah. Lovesick.

Nevin frowned, annoyed by her sarcasm, but he didn’t argue.

Orion heard she was sick, but the boy didn’t catch the irony. He thought his mom was unwell and was

about to ask her about it.

Rhea quickly cut in, Orion, how about I make you some corn chowder? I can make whatever you like, okay? Just be good and eat something, okay?

At the mention of corn chowder, Orion’s hurtful eyes darted toward Demi.

If his mom didn’t care about him, then why should he care about her? Why should he care about her?

But deep down, he still longed for her corn chowder more than anything.

After a moment of stubborn silence, he said stiffly, I want corn chowder. Are you going to make it or not?

He hoped she’d soften and apologize; maybe they could make up.

The boy was crying, but he still continued to threaten her.

Demi shook her head. No. Whoever wants to make it can go ahead.
