Chapter 150
Grayson
It was just after 10 AM when I got to the park and sat on a wooden bench near the walking path, my phone in my hand as I stared at nothing in particular.
Kate had asked to meet me there and I wasn’t even able to ask her what was going on because she’d hung up on me.
I decided to show up with no questions asked. As long as I didn’t have to spend too much time at home, I was fine being anywhere else.
Being home felt so wrong now because every room reminded me of what I thought I had with Tiffany. The sound of a car engine from behind me caught my attention. I looked over my shoulder and spotted Kate’s car slowing down behind me.
After parking, she stepped out quickly and for a second, I could barely recognize her. She usually had that glamorous hair, polished makeup and always in designer outfits. But at that moment, she looked like a different version of herself. She was in some baggy joggers and an oversized hoodie pulled low over her head. She also had some oversized shades on like she wanted to hide her face.
She walked towards me quickly like she wanted to get whatever she had come for done quickly. The moment she sat down beside me, her shoulders curved inward like she was trying to make herself smaller. I watched her for a few seconds as she faced ahead until I felt the need to say something first. “Hey,” I said softly. “You look like you’re undercover or something.”
Because I meant that as a joke, I wasn’t prepared for what came next. She reached for the hood and pushed it off her head, making me hold my breath as I stopped blinking. My brain refused to catch up with what my eyes could see for a few seconds.
Her hair was gone and there were only a few strands scattered all around her scalp.
At a loss for words, I just looked on.
She then took off her shades and I noticed the dark circles and puffiness around her eyes. She’d been bawling her eyes out. I didn’t know which was worse, her face, or her shaved head.
“What happened to you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I was still in shock.
“Tiffany did this to me.” Her voice trembled.
“Tiffany?”
“Yes. It was awful.”
I wanted to ask her how exactly it all happened but couldn’t get far with my question as she burst into tears like she’d been holding it all in.
Quickly, I reached into my jacket and pulled out a handkerchief and gave it to her.
“Here you go.”
She wanted to thank me for it as she took it but couldn’t even get the words out.
Even as she wiped her tears with it, that didn’t help much as more tears just ran down her cheeks. Her shoulders became shaky along with her breath.
I didn’t even interrupt her. I just sat there so she could let it all out.
When she finally spoke, her voice still had a light tremble to it as she told me about how everything had started from the limousine. I knew that Tiffany was a lot of things, but doing that to Kate was just going too far, even for her.
“Tiffany told me that I’m the reason you found out she’s been cheating on you. I still don’t understand how
I chuckled bitterly. “On that day I met you in the parking lot and you said you had just returned from a friend’s wedding, she told me she’d spent the night with you and you had gone shopping.”
She nodded in understanding. “So that’s what it was.”
“I grew more and more suspicious until I did some digging. Not only did I find her in bed with Josh, I also found out that it’s not my baby. I’m sorry it led to Tiffany doing this to you.”
She smiled weakly. “Maybe in the future, I might forgive her for shaving my head and ruining our pictures, but I’ll never forgive her for cutting up my mom’s clothes.”
My forehead creased. “What? She took it that far?”
She nodded, her teary eyes shooting a glare at the ground like she could see Tiffany. “She knew that was what would hurt me the most. I still kept all the torn pieces. After everything I’ve done for her only to be treated this way.”
A tear ran down her cheek as she looked back at me.
“You want to know something?” she asked. “That night, at Maddox’s birthday party, when she said she had to take me home because I had passed out, she didn’t actually stay at my place. She went to Josh.” The images that flashed in my mind made me clench my fist, that familiar ache spreading in my heart again.
It had only been a few days, but I knew I would never forget the feeling of seeing her being fucked by him in that motel.
“Here’s what I don’t understand,” she said, wiping her tear away. “Tiffany was so furious last night because I ruined her marriage, but I saw the two of you at the Gala and you looked happy.”
I let out a short laugh. “That was just for show. We need to keep up appearances. Don’t tell anyone about what’s going on.”
Her puffy eyes narrowed. “Why not? Wait, do your parents know? Do her parents know?”
“No. We’re working on it,” I said quickly. “Just keep your mouth shut.”
She nodded with hesitation. “To be honest, I have a feeling that this isn’t over,” she admitted. “Whatever Tiffany did to me last night was just the beginning. She’s going to ruin my life. She even told me that I would never be able to work again. I know the power she holds.”
“That wouldn’t be fair. You were only covering for her as her best friend.”
