I waited for Kate in my living room, not even going to my bedroom as I believed that waiting there would make me get to the bottom of what was going on much faster.

When I heard that car engine, then the knock on my door, I knew it could only be one person as I had been expecting her for the past twenty minutes.

I opened the door for her with a poker face but struggled to keep it that way when I saw her state. She was in some baggy joggers, a hood over her head and some shades. I’d never seen her like that before. She was always so glamorous.

With a wave of her hand, she smiled at me like we were friends. “Hey. I came right after our call. May I come in?”

“No.” I didn’t bother being polite with her, stepping outside and closing the door behind me.

I sat by the steps, the memory of what had happened in London coming back to me as I faced her car in my driveway.

“I understand why you wouldn’t want me in your home.”

Her voice was gentle, making me raise an eyebrow at the change in her demeanor.

With a sigh, she sat down beside me but I moved further away until I was on the other end. I even wished there had been more room to widen the distance.

“I’m so glad that I can sit here and talk to-”

“Just get to the point,” I cut her off.

She nodded. “Rght. First of all, I want to apologize for everything I’ve ever done to you. You never deserved any of it.”

My head turned towards her slowly. “Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?”

“No, I mean every word. Grayson found out that Tiffany was cheating on him only because I said somethin shouldn’t have. I didn’t even realize it at the time. She was so mad that she spiked my drink, tied me up and tore my heart out with what she did.”

“Is this the part where I’m supposed to care? You expect me…”

I trailed off when she pushed the hood off her head, revealing her bald head with a few strands of hair sticking up. She then removed her shades to show me her puffy eyes.

It was so shocking to see her like that and it took me a moment to process.

When I got over it, I looked away and said, “Am I supposed to care after everything you did to me?”

She shook her head. “I don’t expect you to feel bad for me. Remember that day when I came over to Maddox’s place in London and I found you? You said something about my friendship with Tiffany. I tried to defend it but you were right about everything. I’ve always been in her shadow. I did as I was told just so I could keep being her best friend. After she found out I’m the reason Grayson found out, she said I was nothing but a dog to her and that I’m now useless.”

She went on and on about it, but I still didn’t feel sorry for her. I still let her talk, watching the side profile as I listened to everything she had to say.

“What hurts me the most is that when my mom died, I kept three of her dresses. She cut them like pieces of paper while I watched helplessly.”

At that moment, my heart softened a little and I felt awful for her. I couldn’t imagine someone doing that to my mother’s belongings.

“After what happened between Tiffany and I, I won’t be able to find any peace here,” she continued. “Of course, she might still find me and make my life miserable and shit like that, but it’s better than being here. I’m leaving tomorrow. That’s why I came here. I have to give you something.”

From the front pocket of her pants, she took out a piece of paper that was neatly folded and handed it to me.

“What’s this?” I asked after taking it.

“It’s something you definitely need.”

I scoffed. “What could I possibly need from you?”

My head tilted suspiciously, wondering if that would be the moment Tiffany would show up and the real intentions would be revealed.

But Kate smiled at me, then looked at the sky like it held the memory of what she was about to say. “When I think back to what we did to you in London, when we made you think you were about to meet your sister, I feel like shit.”

“Oh yeah?” I asked with sarcasm.

“I know it’s hard to believe me, but I mean it. That phone that belonged to Anna…”

“Yeah?” My heart skipped a beat as I raised my eyebrows.

“Tiffany personally smashed it.”

I sighed with disappointment. I didn’t know what I was expecting, but that made my blood boil.

“Why would you bring that up?” I asked.

“Tiffany thought everything that came with that phone was destroyed. What she didn’t know was that it had a memory card. I thought I could make some money on the side by coming to you one day if I would ever be in urgent need of lots of cash. I just never got around to doing it.”
