Chapter 99
Chapter 99
The surroundings gradually fell silent.
Everyone exchanged glances, then looked at Lucas with fear, as if they were frozen in place
The person who had mentioned the celebration turned pale, not understanding why Lucas suddenly erupted in such fury, and was/nore worried
about bringing trouble upon themselves.
“Fuck!”
Lucas muttered with a tone of deep disdain.
At that moment, the banquet hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Only when Lucas stormed out with a dark expression did whispers begin to circulate,
“Hey, Mr. Chandler’s mad because we said something about the mute girl, right?”
“Impossible. Everyone knows Lucas hates her. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he have ever brought her into our circle after three years of marriage?”
“Exactly, how could that mute girl make Luke lose his temper?”
“If he cared about her, he wouldn’t have divorced her!”
Jennie listened to the gossip, her hands clenched into fists beneath the table, nails digging into her flesh.
Others might have doubted, but she was certain-Lucas’s outburst was because of Liora.
How could this be?
Wasn’t it him who said Liora, being mute, was unworthy of his attention?
“Jennie…”
Someone called her name.
Jennie quickly composed herself.
“Everyone, please don’t misunderstand. Luke is just having a bad day. He wasn’t angry at any of you,” she said as she stood up, adopting the airs of Mrs. Chandler, offering an apology for Lucas.
“I told you, they made up. How could it be because of the mute girl…”
Everyone began chattering again.
Gorman, however, found their expressions repulsive.
With his hands casually shoved in his pockets, he stood up and left the scene.
When Lucas had trouble last year, Gorman had been the first on the scene.
He had witnessed Liora protecting Lucas, lying in a pool of blood, suffering terribly, but still thinking only of Lucas.
It was only after ensuring he was safe that she passed out.
Gorman had never thought much of Liora, but after that, he had to reconsider his prejudice against her.
Chapter 99
After Lucas left the banquet hall, he opened his phone and checked the trending news
He clicked Liora’s news, scrolling through, each post more shocking than the last
There were nothing but mockery, ridicule, insults, curses, and even photoshopped pictures of her
He immediately dialed a number.
The call was answered almost instantly.
“How long has Liora been trending?” Lucas asked coldly.
“Mr. Chandler, would you like us to take it down?” The person on the other end stammered.
Mr. Chandler had never been concerned with anything related to Ms. Hughes.
Moreover, it was obvious to anyone with eyes that today’s trending topic was aimed at elevating Jennie by stepping on Ms. Hughes
When Jennie had first returned, Mr. Chandler had warned them to make sure she remained in a good mood during her pregnancy.
He had even thought for a while that today’s trending news was arranged by Mr. Chandler to please his lost love.
“I told you, I want Liora to have a peaceful life. Are you too stupid to understand? How could you let something that harms her stay on the trending
list for so long?” Lucas’s anger flared.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Chandler! I’ll handle it immediately!” The voice on the other end panicked.
“Find the source of the rumors. I want to know who’s behind this! If something like this happens again, you’re all fired!” Lucas hung up without
waiting for a reply.
Outside, the biting winter wind was chilling, but it couldn’t douse the fire in Lucas’s heart or quell the inexplicable anxiety gnawing at him.
His phone was filled with messages.
But none of them were from Liora.
After their last meeting on the night of the divorce, she had vanished completely.
She was being trashed on the trending list, and yet, she didn’t even try to contact him…
Not even to curse him out or question him?
“Luke, are you really this mad?” Gorman’s voice cut through his thoughts, as he swung his car keys with a smirk, strolling over to Lucas.
“I heard people inside saying this trending news was arranged by you to make your little pregnant wife happy. I almost believed it.”
“Stop talking nonsense,” Lucas frowned. “Jennie and I are not like that. The child is not mine.”
Gorman wasn’t surprised.
“But now, everyone thinks you’re together, and that the child is yours,” Gorman tilted his head, watching Lucas. “Lucas, does Liora know the child
isn’t yours?”
Lucas didn’t answer, his face dark with tension.
Gorman smirked, already knowing the answer.
Chapter 99
“Hey, let’s make a bet, Gorman suggested casually.
Lucas gave him a confused look, his guard up
Gorman was young and carefree, but Lucas knew that the kid had a sharp mind and ruthless tactics. He’d taken down more than a few reckless
second-generation rich kids in bets.
“I don’t need much. Just à Bugatti,” Gorman grinned slyly, his tone firm, “Let’s bet. If you divorce Liora, you’ll regret it
Lucas laughed, a humorless sound.
“Regret it?”
“Yes,” Gorman was certain, “You’ll never meet someone who loves you more than Liora.”
