Chapter 212
At the hospital, Dora felt like she was about to lose her mind too.
All she had done was correct Summer once, saying Steven was dead and she needed to face reality.
And just like that, Summer had another episode.
On top of that, Dora had just gotten word that Ruby had connections to a powerful official in Eirden.
There was a real chance she might actually be able to fix this mess.
So Dora’s attitude toward Summer had shifted again, almost immediately.
She still didn’t approve of her being with Evan.
But at the very least, she no longer dared treat her the way she treated Stella.
Now Summer was in the middle of another breakdown, crying for Steven, and Dora was exhausted.
With the baby in such bad shape too, she genuinely hoped Evan would come back to the hospital.
At least then she would have someone to lean on.
When Stella didn’t answer, Dora snapped, “I’m asking you. If the child dies, are you going to be happy?”
Stella let out a cold scoff. “Whether that child lives or dies has nothing to do with me. What exactly are you implying here?”
“What, just because I married into your family, I’m supposed to care about that child like a mother would? Your family really does have some ridiculous rules.”
The second she heard the accusation in Dora’s tone, Stella fired right back.
On the other end of the line, Dora’s breathing turned heavy.
Stella kept going. “Why don’t you go ask around all those rich wives in Harbor City? Which family expects a woman who marries the second son to love the eldest son’s child like her own, and cry harder than the child’s actual mother when something happens?

“Go ahead. Ask around and see who’d be willing to marry their daughter into your family.
“Then again, I was stupid. And that’s on me. I had no family backing me, so whatever emotion you all decided I should have, I was expected to have it.
“If the eldest son’s child gets sick, I’m supposed to worry, panic, and fall apart too?
“I married Evan to be his wife, not to be a servant to the entire Wright family.
“So now I’m supposed to carry your whole family on my back too?”
Dora was so furious she nearly fainted on the spot.
“You… you…”
Stella let out a cold laugh. “What? You want to say I wasn’t like this before? Well, six months ago, Steven

wasn’t dead yet.”
Back then, Summer couldn’t make this much of a scene.
Ever since Steven died, she had become more and more unbearable.
Under that kind of performance, who wouldn’t eventually lose their temper?
But that was the Wright family for you.
When you were nice, they took advantage of it.
The second you fought back, they said you’d been pretending all along.
So they were allowed to bully people, but no one else was allowed to snap?
Dora gritted out, “You’ve gone too far.”
Stella laughed. “Right. In your eyes, I was never allowed to go too far.”
“You know that much, at least. What do you even have? You don’t even have a family to back you up.”
Stella went quiet for a beat.
There it was.
That was exactly why they had always felt so free to bully her.
Stella said coolly, “Right. Summer has family, so you spoil her. You say that like her family is guaranteed to stay strong forever.”
Sometimes Stella really didn’t understand it.
Dora was already the wife of Harbor City’s most powerful family.
Why did she still feel the need to flatter anyone?
And yet she truly believed in catering to the powerful and stepping on the weak.
Especially when it came to Ruby.
She had always been terrified of offending her.
Dora’s breathing turned uneven. “Why can’t her family stay strong?
“You think just because of this one incident, Ruby’s really going to fall?
“Let me tell you this, Stella. You’re wrong. She’ll get through this very soon.
“So stop trying to compare yourself to Summer.
“If I were you, I’d know my place and leave the Wright family as soon as possible.”
