Chapter 244

Evan sat there with a cigarette between his fingers, staring at Summer coldly.

Ever since Stella started fighting back, that was how he looked at her every time.

But this time, there was something else in it too.

Something dangerous.

Summer’s heart was already in her throat.

She took several deep breaths, forcing down the panic clawing at her chest. “My mom said… if it really comes to it, we should let him go.”

Evan’s eyes turned even colder.

Seeing his expression change, Summer hurried on, “She doesn’t know about my daughter yet. She only knows the boy is still in such bad shape. She said that for a child, suffering like this is torture too. She said even if I can’t bear it, I might have to let him go.”

In that instant, Summer did everything she could to smooth over what Ruby had said at the end of the call.

Evan’s face grew darker.

Her tears fell harder. “She also said… if he’s going to die, at least let it mean something.”

She looked up at him through tear-filled eyes. “Steven, how can a baby that small die in a way that means something? My mom really doesn’t know how to comfort people, does she?”

At that moment, tears streamed down her face, and she looked exactly like a pitiful mother on the verge of collapse.

Evan’s breathing started to turn unsteady.

Summer kept crying. “How could I bear that? He’s my child. How could I bear hearing that a baby that small should die for something?”

Feeling the change in Evan’s breathing, Summer’s mind gradually cleared.

There were bodyguards outside the room.

ľ

She had already kept her voice low on the phone, so there was no way Evan could have heard everything through the door.

At most, he had caught her mother’s last line.

Now, all she had to do was smooth over that one sentence.

Her tears kept falling. “That’s my child. How could I ever bear losing him?

“They’re my children. From the moment they were born, they became my whole life.”

As she spoke, she hugged a pillow tightly to her chest, looking heartbreakingly fragile.

Evan closed his eyes briefly. “Why didn’t you call the police?”

He had finally voiced the question that had been bothering him the whole drive over.

Summer and her mother both insisted Stella had taken the baby.

And yet they hadn’t called the police right away.

The one being accused had.

So the people who should have called the police didn’t.

And the one who supposedly didn’t dare was the one who actually made the report?

Summer froze for a second.

Then she looked at him, tears spilling even faster. “If we called the police, would that guarantee my baby came back alive?”

Evan said nothing.

Summer sniffled. “I used to think I understood Stella. But now…”

She cut herself off mid-sentence.

Then her tears came even harder. “This time, I didn’t dare gamble.”

It was a simple line, but it pointed everything back at Stella.

She was saying she was afraid Stella would hurt the child if the police got involved.

And honestly, that excuse sounded reasonable enough.

When she saw a flicker of hesitation in Evan’s face, she pressed on.

“No matter what, if Stella brings my baby back, I won’t pursue anything.”

“As long as she gives my baby back to me alive. That’s all I want.”

At that moment, the pain in Summer’s eyes looked like a mother’s compromise.

As if as long as her child came back safely, she would agree to anything.

Evan didn’t know how he got back to Mount Lara.

Stella was quiet.
