Summer said nothing.
When she heard the maid’s words, her heart sank even further.
“Oh, right,” the maid added. “Wasn’t this how the people working for your Bailey family were treated before? Why can’t you take it now that it’s your turn?”
Summer fell silent.
The people who worked for the Bailey family?
Yes. In the past, many of the servants who worked for the Bailey family had lived under basic conditions like this.
But it had never been one bun a day.
At least they had three meals, and some side dishes too. She had nothing.
She stared at the single dry bun on the plate. There was not even a trace of warmth rising from it.
Her chest heaved with anger, and she could not suppress it no matter how hard she tried.
Stella had done this on purpose.
All of this was intentional.
She had done it deliberately.
But even if Stella had done it on purpose, so what?
No one in the entire Wright family could do anything to her now. What could Summer possibly do?
“Not eating?”
Seeing that Summer had not moved, the maid’s tone turned even colder.
Just as the maid was about to take the plate away, Summer quickly grabbed the bun.
“I’ll eat it. I’ll eat.”
She forced out those words through clenched teeth.
How could she not eat?
If she did not eat, where would she get the strength to keep going?
She had already gone two days with barely any food. Forget one bun. Even if it were only half a bun, she would
have to treasure it.
Summer was starving now.
Being treated like this by Stella was humiliating, but she had no choice except to accept it.
In the end, she picked up the bun and began taking big bites.
All she could think about now was finishing this bun, going back to her room, taking a hot shower, and sleeping in
a warm room.
The animal enclosure had been so cold that afternoon. Countless times, she had wanted to return to her room.

But when she thought about the fact that she would get nothing to eat if she did not work, she forced herself to endure it.
Again and again, she told herself that everything would be fine once she went back to her room.
Once she returned, she would finally be warm.
The bun was dry and hard. Biting into it felt like chewing on waxed wood.
Only now did Summer realize how good the food Dora and Mrs. Mendes had shared with her before had been.
Back then, she had looked down on it.
Now, this bun was truly dry and tough.
After finally managing to finish it, Summer turned and headed upstairs.
But just as she reached the staircase, Dora came down with a dark expression.
She found Gray and demanded, “Why is there no heat in our rooms? And why is there no hot water?”
They had been exhausted after working all day.
Bonus
She and Fiona had planned to go back to their rooms, take hot showers, and sleep comfortably through the night.
Before, they had loved staying up late.
Now, they looked forward to nothing more than the feeling of lying in bed.
After a whole day of labor, the only comfort they could find was the warmth of their beds.
But when they returned to their rooms tonight, they discovered that even the temperature inside felt like an icehouse.
There was no heat in the rooms.
There was not even any hot water.
The temperature inside was almost colder than outside, making them shiver uncontrollably.
Gray said, “Of course it’s been shut off.”
Faced with Dora’s questioning, Gray answered without the slightest attempt to hide it.
When Summer heard his words, a bad feeling rose in her chest.
She hurried back to her room to check.
Sure enough, she saw Mrs. Smith shivering violently inside. Even the heat in the hallway outside their rooms had been shut off.
Mrs. Smith was curled up on the small bed.
Summer’s breath caught. “Why is it so cold in here?”
