At a time like this, the only reason anyone would help Summer was if she had something on them.
Otherwise, why would they take such a risk for her?
But whose secret could Summer possibly be holding over them?
Her phone buzzed, cutting through her thoughts.
Stella glanced at the screen.
It was a number from Eirden.
She answered.
“Hello?”
“It’s me.”
Ruby’s voice came through the line.
She was in Eirden now.
And she was clearly not as arrogant as before.
She had lowered her head.
It showed in every trace of humility in her voice.
That humility surprised Stella.
She had never seen Ruby speak like this before.
In Stella’s mind, Ruby had always been a hard woman.
Hard–hearted. Stubborn. Unreasonable.
Whenever she wanted something, she took it by force.
There was nothing wrong with having backbone.
But Ruby’s was misplaced.
And because of it, she had made enemies of countless women over the years.
Stella’s voice carried a faint smile.
“Mrs. Bailey.”
Ruby fell silent.
At the words Mrs. Bailey, the air over the phone seemed to turn colder
That title was nothing but irony now
Mrs. Bailey was supposed to be a respectful form of address
But Stella had never had an ounce of respect for her
Ruby drew in a breath.
“Let’s meet.”
+15
She tried to sound gentle.
Humble.
There was none of the arrogance she used to have.
Before, even over the phone, her commanding attitude had been impossible to miss.
But it was gone now.
“Meet you?” Stella asked.
“Yes. I know who you really are now.”
A trace of bleakness entered Ruby’s voice.
Perhaps she had finally realized how foolish it had been to make an enemy of Stella.
Back then, she had known nothing.
Yet she had dared to go up against Stella.
She had been far too full of herself.
Now, whenever Ruby thought about what she had done, regret ate at her.
“Oh?” Stella said. “So now that you know who I am, you think I have no choice but to meet you?”
For Ruby to bring up her identity now, she had clearly done some digging.
In Harbor City, most people probably still knew nothing for certain./
They had only seen Aaron greet Stella at the airport and begun guessing at their relationship.
