As soon as Nina finished speaking, Miranda, sitting right next to Loren, lit up with excitement. “Really, Aunt Nina? I can actually go to Betrico with you?”

Nina paused for a few seconds. “But you need to be mentally prepared.”

Miranda was stunned for a moment, but quickly got what Nina was saying. She nodded firmly. “Yeah, I’ve been ready for this for a long time.

“I’ve been training with Falconer, and I’ve made a lot of progress. I’m still not as good as Philip, but I can diagnose basic illnesses now.”

Nina already knew all this.

Falconer gave her daily updates on Miranda’s progress.

Nina had to admit that Scarlet’s genes were really something else.

Miranda had been stuck in the Hawthorne family for over ten years, never getting a real chance at an education.

She only started actually learning after she came to Riverdale, and it had only been a few months.

During that time, Nina brought in professors from every field imaginable to cram lessons into Miranda’s schedule. Her days were packed from dawn till dusk.

She barely got four hours of sleep a night.

Nina had thought Miranda wouldn’t be able to stick with it.

But not only did she stick with it, but she was picking things up at lightning speed.

Miranda was basically starting from scratch, going from elementary school all the way to high school in just a few months.

The workload was insane. On top of that, she was training in martial arts with Falconer and learning medical theory from Philip.

She was practically studying even while she ate.

Nina had never given Miranda an IQ test, but judging by how she was doing, she was definitely smarter than most people. Nina didn’t respond to Miranda. Instead, she turned to Loren. “Loren, there’s something I need to tell you up front. Taking Miranda to Betrico this time is going to be dangerous.”

Loren’s head snapped up. “Is it about Shirley?”

Nina nodded. “Yeah, we’ve got some news. I’m planning to have Miranda take the lead-”

Before she could finish, Loren cut her off, “Do what you think is best. I trust you. You wouldn’t bring it up if you weren’t

sure.”

A smile tugged at Nina’s lips. Talking to smart people was just so much easier.

Nina looked at Miranda. “So, do you have the guts?”

She didn’t say it outright, but Miranda understood exactly what Nina meant. 1/4

“I do!” Miranda replied, her expression dead serious. I’ve been working my ass off these past few months, picking up every skill I could, all for this day. I want my mom to see that her daughter is not a failure!”

“All right,” Nina said, then turned to Philip. “Pack your stuff too. You’re coming with me to Betrico in a couple of days.”

Philip jumped at the chance. He couldn’t be happier.

He’d become Nina’s student for one reason: to learn medicine directly from her.

But Nina was always swamped. Even with daily video calls from Riverdale, it just wasn’t cutting it. He wanted to be right by her side, learning face-to-face.

Once they finished talking business, Loren and Melody insisted on having Nina and Ryan stay for dinner.

They couldn’t say no, so they agreed.

After dinner, Nina and Ryan headed back.

After Samuel’s death anniversary tomorrow, Nina and Ryan would be heading back to Betrico.

Ever since she got back, Nina had been swamped with work and hadn’t had much time to spend with Sarah.

Before she left, she wanted to make sure she spent some real quality time with her grandma.

When Nina and Ryan got back, Sarah was sitting alone in the backyard, just gazing at the trees, lost in thought.

Ryan stepped up and put his arm around Nina’s shoulders, said quietly, “Go talk to Sarah. I’ll go find Ethan and talk over some business stuff.”

“Silly girl, you’re doing this for the country. You don’t need to apologize to me,” Sarah said with a sigh. “But Nina, you have grown up, and I don’t have as much time with you as I’d like

Truth be told, she really wanted to go to Betrico with Nina.

Linda and Judy were always so thoughtful, and all the grandkids were good kids, but Sarah always felt like there was a thin veil between her and the rest of the family.

She just couldn’t quite explain it. Even though they were family, it just didn’t feel that close.

Sometimes she wondered if it was because she always doted on Nina. Maybe that was why she felt this distance. But she just couldn’t wrap her head around it.

Maybe that was just how it was when one got old. Some things just didn’t make sense anymore.

Sarah often felt lonely and wanted to go to Betrico to see Nina, but she was worried she’d just be in Nina’s way. So she kept her longing to herself.

Nina caught the spark in Sarah’s eyes, even if it was just for a moment.

Suddenly, Nina felt a pang in her chest. She’d always put her duty to the country first, and somehow forgot that her grandma needed her love, too.

Nina said softly, “Grandma, I’ve always wanted you to come live with me in Betrico, but I was worried you might not get used to it, so I never brought it up.

“Now that Ryan and I are about to start planning our wedding, things are so hectic. We barely even have time to eat. I was thinking, if you came to Betrico, maybe you could help out with the cooking sometimes.”

Nina smiled as she spoke, “You know, I really miss your cooking when I’m in Betrico. Ryan tries to make them, but they never taste quite like yours.

“If I want to have them, I have to plan a whole trip back to Riverdale. But if you came with us, I could have them whenever I wanted. And whenever I miss you, I can just see you.”

Sarah reached out and gently stroked Nina’s face, her eyes full of concern. “I knew you weren’t taking care of yourself in Betrico Just look at you. You’ve gotten so skinny.”

Nina looped her arm through Sarah’s. “I really can’t take care of myself, so I need you to come to Betrico and look after me.

‘Grandma Maria is there, too, so you two can go shopping together whenever you want. You won’t ever feel bored, right?

Sarah still looked a bit hesitant.

“Bring Anna with you,” Nina said. “You’re so used to having her around, I know you’d feel lost without her. Let her come to Betrico with us.

“And if Anna’s worried about leaving her family behind, we’ll just bring them along too Sarah, come with me, okay? We’ve spent so many years apart. I really want to make up for lost time with you

Sarah was finally moved. She smiled and said, “Alright, I’ll go to Betrico with you”

Nina smiled. “Perfect! Since you’re coming to Betrico, we’ll have the wedding there too, so you won’t have to worry about
