The last time Ellie mentioned where she would be studying abroad, Lisa and I had already guessed. Women tend to be perceptive about these things.

"Yesterday, Ellie called Brandon and told him about it. She even sent some photos. Want to see?" I held up my phone.

"Of course, why not?" she said, taking my phone.

She saw a photo of Keith and Ellie, standing with their backs to the sea, arms raised high. The image radiated energy and joy.

"He's definitely different." Lisa sighed.

"Different how?" I asked.

"When he was with me, he always seemed so tense. But look at this photo—he looks completely at ease. That old-fashioned Keith needs someone like Ellie to bring out his energy," she mused.

"Do you feel anything else seeing this?" I probed.

She handed the phone back to me. "What do you expect me to feel? Regret? Jealousy?"

Lisa looked out the window. "Some people are meant to pass through our lives—like Chris for you, like Keith for me. They were fleeting moments in our journey, like winter in the cycle of seasons."
