Chapter 94
Chapter 94
Riley
I had always hated Violet. From the moment we were kids, everything about her set my teeth on edge. She was everything I wanted to be, beautiful, rich, the kind of girl who turned heads the second she walked into a room. And to make it worse, my father was only the adopted son, while hers was the true Moore heir.
At school they made fun of me. They called my dad a charity case. They said I was just a background character in Violet’s life story. The words stung
Violet never did anything mean on purpose, at least that’s what everyone said, but she always had a way of showing she was untouchable. She would come to my rescue when people bullied me, acting kind and sweet, and everybody applauded her for it.
If I’d been in her place, I would have bullied her, shown off my father’s money until people bowed. I wanted that life.
So I prayed that somehow our lives could be exchanged. I don’t know who heard my prayer, God, the devil, or someone else, but someone surely did, because everything changed in a single day.
Violet’s family had an accident. Her parents were gone. She and her little brother lost everything, and I finally got what I’d always wanted. I took it all. I wanted her to suffer. I even brought Nora back to take Violet’s place in Matthew’s life.
And yet, my fingers kept drifting to the spot on my neck where she’d nearly strangled me, her voice still echoing in my head.
“Killing you would be mercy. You have to suffer tenfold what you did to me and my brother. I will make sure you wish you were all dead. I, Violet Moore, promise you all a life worse than hell.”
I swallowed hard.
Why did it scare me so much? Was it the look in her eyes, or was it the feeling that I’d finally crossed a line I shouldn’t have?
I sat up a little straighter when the woman next to me smiled and said, “You’re so pretty, Riley. Do you have a boyfriend?”
I turned to her. She was one of the five wealthy parents who had come today. My mother gave me a quick look, a silent warning to be perfect. These were rich people, and potential future mothers-in-law. I had to play the part.
I smiled, folding my hands neatly in my lap, and forced my voice into something sweet. “No, ma’am. I don’t have a boyfriend.
The woman’s smile widened. “Good, good. I have an older son. He’s overseas right now, working with his father. You’d make a perfect match.”
Another woman laughed and cut in. “Please, she’d be a better match for my son.”
“Oh, don’t start. I asked first,” the first woman said.
One of them leaned toward my mother. “You trained your daughter well. Why couldn’t you train that foolish niece of yours? She’s so stupid, trying to blame our sons for the accident.”
Another woman nodded. “Right. Riley is perfect, while that stupid girl acts like a child. From what I’ve heard, she’s just a poor college student who can’t even afford anything. She’s leeching off people like you and thinks she can go up against us. Especially when we have one of the best lawyers in the country. Does she really think she can win against him?”
All eyes turned to the middle aged man at the head of the table. He smirked, smug. “Don’t worry about it ladies, we’ll sue her and put her in her place. There’s no way she’ll find a better lawyer than me, nobody would dare go up against us. Even if they tried, we’d win.”

My smile finally felt real. For the first time since yesterday, I felt like myself again. Listening to them, I felt a spark of satisfaction. Even these women were scrambling to claim me for their precious sons. And Violet? Who did she think she was? She could never stand against me.
Even if she somehow had someone backing her, they would change their minds the moment they realized the people she had offended. Nobody would dare challenge these people.
At first, I genuinely felt bad about what happened to Sebastian. He was just a kid, after all. But the guilt never lasted long. It wasn’t like I wanted him to end up in a coma. That wasn’t my fault. All I did was tell the others to teach him a lesson after Violet refused to help me cheat. What happened after was an accident. I never meant for things to go that far.
“I apologize for my cousin’s mistake,” I said softly, glancing around the table. “She’s just really emotional sometimes. But don’t worry, I’ll talk to her. I’m sure she’ll come around. Especially after seeing you people here. She wouldn’t be foolish enough to oppose you—”
The door swung open before I could finish.
Every head turned, mine included. I smirked, already picturing Violet slinking in, weak, pathetic, with dark circles under her eyes, hiding behind that ridiculous hoodie she always wore. She was always easy to manipulate. I couldn’t wait to watch her beg in front of them, to prove once and for all that I was better.
But when I narrowed my eyes at her, the sight that met me wasn’t the broken, pitiful cousin I expected. Violet walked in like a completely different person.
She wasn’t slouching, or trembling.
