The intimidating bodyguards trailing behind him only magnified his gentle, benevolent demeanor.
"U-Uncle Lawrence..."
"Don't get up, my boy, you're still recovering..."
Lawrence Lancaster hurried over, his face etched with concern as he supported Silas's arm. "Does it still hurt?"
A layer of cold sweat broke out across Silas's back. "N-No. Not anymore."
One of the bodyguards quickly brought a chair to the bedside.
Lawrence sat down, casually crossing one leg over the other. His gaze swept over Silas.
"How is the recovery going?"
"Thank you for asking, Uncle Lawrence. I'm almost healed. I should be discharged soon." Silas forced a stiff smile, standing a little straighter. "Once I'm out, I'm going to carve that bastard Hudson to pieces!"
Lawrence chuckled, patting Silas's shoulder. "Now, now. Let's not be hasty."
The pat was light, almost tender, but Silas flinched violently.
Lawrence retracted his hand and leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on Silas with an eerie warmth. "I only came by to ask you a few questions. Once we're done, I'll be out of your hair."
Silas nodded frantically. "Ask whatever you want, Uncle Lawrence. I won't hide anything."
Lawrence nodded in approval.
He had refined, scholarly features, a face that looked warm and inviting whether he was smiling or not.
"The drug I told you to give the Reed girl... Did you give it to her?"
Silas opened his mouth, his voice trembling. "I... I was still trying to find a way..."
Smack!
The backhand sent Silas's head snapping to the side. He stumbled backward, nearly toppling off the bed.
He clutched his face, his ears ringing as a trickle of blood seeped from the corner of his mouth.
Lawrence stood up and methodically unbuttoned his suit jacket, handing it to the bodyguard behind him.
