"Really?" Martha burst into tears of pure joy.
She had suffered in the shadows for decades, degrading herself to work as a servant just to stay close to her child and Henry.
But she had always been a dirty secret.
She couldn't even speak freely to Liana, terrified that someone might catch on. Her entire relationship with Henry had been confined to stolen moments in cheap hotels, the back of a car, or behind locked bedroom doors like this.
But if she became the official Mrs. Fairchild...
She could finally stand proudly by his side!
"Why are you crying? Of course it's real." Henry chuckled softly, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "I know you've been wronged all these years. As long as you give me a son, I promise I'll make everything right."
Martha threw herself into his arms, entirely overwhelmed with emotion.
She had been with him since she was sixteen. He was already married with a family back then, but she hadn't cared. She would have gladly stayed his secret mistress for the rest of her life just to be near him.
By eighteen, she had given birth to Liana.
When Liana was adopted as the Fairchild ward, Martha had followed her into the manor disguised as a maid. That was over twenty years ago.
She was forty-five now.
The chances of conceiving naturally were incredibly low.
But there was always IVF.
As long as she could give Henry an heir, she would endure absolutely anything.
...
Meanwhile, Nora took Hudson's 'terrible advice' and immediately fired off an email to Sienna.
It was true.
Ever since Sienna fled the city, email had been their only reliable lifeline. Nora had no idea what remote corner of the earth Sienna was hiding in, but the cell reception there was notoriously awful.
If Sienna hadn't emailed recently mentioning a prenatal checkup, Nora would have assumed she was living in the wilderness like a hermit.
Hudson walked over with a glass of warm water, amused by her intense, furrowed brow. He sat down beside her, pressing the glass to her lips. "Sent it?"
"Yeah."
Nora took a sip from his hand. "Her signal is terrible out there. It'll probably be days before she replies, I—"
Before she could finish, her phone vibrated violently on the coffee table.
She glanced at the caller ID and practically launched herself off the couch. "It's Sienna!"
