Hudson glanced toward where the rabbit had been, a smile playing on his lips. "You got it."
Nora's eyes immediately lit up. Her gaze sparkled like crushed diamonds, stunningly bright.
"Really?"
"Really."
Hudson reached out and ruffled her hair. "My wife is amazing. A perfect shot. An absolute sniper."
"..."
Nora blushed at the praise, but her eyes held a spark of excitement. She had clearly discovered the thrill of the hunt.
Hudson watched her glowing expression, his smile widening. "You like it? How about I take you to hunt something bigger?"
...
At the same time, in downtown Northampton, inside the Fairchild Corporation tower.
In the top-floor executive suite, Finnian Fairchild stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a cup of cold coffee.
The Northampton skyline stretched out before him, a sprawling metropolis of towering skyscrapers and endless rivers of traffic. Yet, he wasn't looking at any of it.
His gaze was fixed on some invisible point in the distance, lost in thought.
Behind him on the desk, his phone lit up, then dimmed.
Finnian turned, picked up the phone, and checked the new message.
It was from Jude.
[Hudson is here. He's at the preserve.]
Finnian set the coffee cup down. His thumb hovered over the screen for a second before he dialed the number.
The call connected after a single ring.
"Hello..."
"Set it up. I want to see him."
Jude went silent for a moment. "I invited him to dinner tonight. I'll send you the time and address. Just come by then."
