Azure Bay Private Hospital was nestled halfway up the hills of the exclusive district. It was the most elite medical facility in San Francisco, looking less like a hospital and more like a luxury estate. White walls, arched corridors, and lush gardens filled the air with a faint floral scent.
Hudson led Nora into the VIP inpatient wing. The moment they stepped out of the elevator, they spotted a figure at the end of the hall.
Lawrence Lancaster was wearing a dark grey suit, his back creased and a heavy stubble lining his jaw. He had clearly pulled an all-nighter.
"Hudson, you're back." Uncle Lawrence smiled warmly, walking toward them. His gaze flicked to Nora for a split second before snapping back. "Did you enjoy your trip?"
Hudson ignored the pleasantries, walking straight toward the VIP suite. Lawrence didn't seem bothered. He kept pace, his tone overly polite. "Grandmother is fine now. The doctors stabilized her vitals, so there's no need to panic."
Hudson finally stopped. He turned to look at Lawrence, his lips curving into a cold, hollow smile.
"You're playing the devoted son, Uncle Lawrence. I heard you stood guard outside her door all night."
Lawrence waved a hand, looking perfectly humble. "It's the least I could do. My mother is getting old; she needs family around. You kids go out and have your fun, and I, being a man with too much free time, will stay by her side."
Hudson caught the subtle dig, his smile widening into a lethal smirk. "Since you're so devoted, you should stay by her side permanently. Starting today, you can eat, sleep, and live at the manor. Watch over her day and night. It'll put our minds at ease."
Lawrence's smile cracked for a fraction of a second, so fast it was barely noticeable. "You're joking, Hudson. I'd love to stay with my mother all day, but someone has to manage the family's outside affairs..."
"Didn't you just say you were a man with too much free time?" Hudson cut in, his voice dangerously flat. "A man with free time has nothing but time."
Lawrence's smile froze completely before he forced it back into place. "You kids take everything so literally. It was just a figure of speech."
Hudson shot him a look of pure ice and pulled Nora toward the suite.
