Jade Reed stared at her for a few seconds, as if trying to decipher the truth in her words, before scoffing and pulling her hand away.

"Talk is cheap. If you still want a place in the Reed Residence, you better think carefully about whose side you're on."

Penelope Reed didn't hesitate. "I am absolutely on your side, Jade..."

"Enough, don't just stand there hovering over me. I'm hungry. Hurry up and pick up some groceries."

"Yes, of course, right away. I'll get some vitamins too. You've lost so much weight these past few days, you need to build up your strength."

Jade completely ignored her, curling up on the sofa and scrolling through her phone.

Penelope stood up, carefully picking up the broken glass from the floor and wiping away the spilled water before turning to leave the living room.

The moment the door clicked shut behind her, she let out a long exhale and raised a hand to rub her throbbing temples.

For the past few days, she had waited on Jade hand and foot at the hospital, bathing her and feeding her with more dedication than she'd shown her own mother.

And how did Jade repay her?

With nothing but constant berating and verbal abuse.

If she didn't desperately want to keep her place in the Reed family, there was no way she would have stooped to such humiliating levels.

At that thought, Penelope narrowed her eyes. It was all that wretched Nora Reed's fault!
