Hudson didn't even break his stride. He merely turned his head and gave the older man a cold, indifferent glance.
Not looking the least bit embarrassed by the snub, Lawrence beckoned to him. "Come, help me greet the guests. I've been standing here for hours, and my legs are killing me."
A mocking smirk touched Hudson's lips, his eyes remaining devoid of warmth. "I'd say the role of doorman suits you perfectly, Uncle Lawrence. Keep up the good work. You might need the experience to pay your bills when you're older."
Lawrence's smile faltered for a fraction of a second before returning in full force. "You've always had a sharp tongue since you were a kid. I can never win an argument against you."
His gaze shifted to Nora, his smile widening. "Nora, don't mind his hostility. When he and Silas were little, they stuck to me like glue. The two brothers used to be so close, too. It's a shame they've grown so distant now that they have their own lives."
Nora didn't reply, but his words triggered a sudden memory of the Legacy Data Drive Ginger had given her.
So much had happened since Hudson returned that she had completely forgotten about it.
Maybe she could swing by the office after the gala to retrieve it for him?
Her thoughts were interrupted by Hudson's icy voice. "Are you done talking?"
Lawrence chuckled, shaking his head. "Look at him, impatient as always."
Hudson had zero interest in humoring the man any further. Tightening his grip on Nora's hand, he bypassed him and walked straight toward the grand ballroom.
Arthur instinctively moved to follow them, but Lawrence suddenly let out a heavy sigh.
"Hudson pushing me away is one thing. But Arthur, you were the first boy I took in. I raised you with my own two hands. Do you really hate me so much you can't even call me 'Godfather' anymore?"
Arthur froze in his tracks. His face hardened into stone as he prepared to walk away.
But Lawrence clamped a hand around his wrist. "I know you resent me for what happened to Archer. I truly regret it."
Arthur shot him a venomous glare, pure fury igniting in his eyes.
