Nora stiffened immediately, whipping her head around to stare at Hudson.
Hudson said nothing. His grip on her hand tightened fractions of an inch before he turned to level a freezing glare at Lawrence.
Lawrence watched their subtle reactions, his smile growing more vicious.
"You can protect her for now, but you can't protect her forever."
His voice dropped lower, but that gentle smile remained plastered on his face. "Pissing me off is a bad move, Hudson. When you're dead and buried, do you really want me taking out my frustration on your delicate little wife?"
The second the threat left his mouth, Hudson moved.
Lawrence had anticipated an attack and twisted to block it, but he vastly underestimated Hudson's brutal strength.
A devastating kick connected directly with Lawrence's ribs. He was launched backward, crashing violently into the heavy wooden doors of the banquet hall.
The doors rattled with a sickening thud.
Lawrence went deathly pale. The metallic taste of blood flooded his throat, and a thin crimson line trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"Lawrence!"
Silas gasped, rushing forward to haul his uncle to his feet.
Lawrence steadied himself against Silas, wiping the blood from his mouth. He stared at the red smear on his hand and started to laugh.
"You've always had a hair-trigger temper, Hudson."
Hudson scoffed, his voice laced with venom. "Yeah. I do. That's why I'm not going to make you wait a year. I'll put you in the ground by the end of the week."
He shifted his murderous gaze to Silas. "And since you're so devoted to our dear uncle, you should pick out a casket for him now. Otherwise, when I shatter him into pieces, you won't have a grave to visit."
Without waiting for a response, Hudson wrapped his arm around Nora and marched out into the night.
A black Maybach rolled away from Lancaster Hall, disappearing into the dark streets.
Lawrence watched the taillights shrink into two blurry red dots, the amusement bleeding out of his expression.
He pressed a hand against his bruised ribs, hissing sharply through his teeth at the intense pain.
Damn it.
