Noticing his grandfather's reaction, Vincent quickly jumped in to formally introduce her. "This is Hudson's wife. Also the newly found heiress of the Fairchild family..."
Alastair snapped out of his daze. He cleared his throat, shooting another glare at Vincent. "Any news on your Aunt Felix? Even the Fairchilds managed to track down their missing daughter. And what do you do? March around with your bodyguards trying to look important. Are those meatheads going to find my daughter or give me a great-grandchild?"
Withering under the relentless barrage, Vincent shrank lower in his chair, muttering, "They at least keep me breathing..."
"You dare talk back?!"
Alastair looked ready to launch his heavy coffee mug directly at Vincent's head. Vivian Vaughn quickly placed a restraining hand over his. "That's enough. It's the holidays. Why are you picking fights with the boy? They traveled all this way to visit, and you open fire the second they walk through the door."
Her reprimand managed to temper his explosive rage. Alastair let out a heavy scoff, dropping back into his chair. He took a massive swig of coffee, though his eyes continued to drill holes into Vincent.
As Alastair prepared to reload for a second verbal assault, Hudson and Nora exchanged a knowing glance.
Hudson cleared his throat, his voice steady and unhurried. "Mr. Vaughn, actually... I came today for another reason aside from the holidays. There’s something I need to tell you."
Alastair raised an eyelid. "What is it?"
Hudson's lips curved slightly. "I have... news regarding Felix."
The words sucked the oxygen right out of the room.
Alastair’s hand froze halfway to the table. Vivian’s head snapped up. Even Vincent sat up completely straight, all traces of his flippant attitude vanishing instantly.
"What did you say?" Alastair’s voice spiked in volume. "You have news about Felix? Where is she? How is she? Why the hell didn't you say so immediately?!"
Vivian leaned forward, desperation breaking her voice. "Hudson, please tell us. Is she... is she okay? Where is she? Why hasn't she come home in over twenty years?"
Though Vincent didn't say a word, his eyes were glued to Hudson, waiting for the bombshell.
Hudson tilted his head slightly toward Finnian, gesturing with his chin. "I think Finnian is the right person to answer that."
In an instant, every eye in the room zeroed in on Finnian.
Finnian’s face remained a mask of perfect composure, but inside, his stomach was doing backflips.
