Nora was speechless.
Wasn't this approach a little too ruthless?
"...We can do that?"
Hudson lightly tapped the tip of her nose. "We have to learn from our mistakes. Besides, we're going to make a trade eventually. Getting it in our hands early doesn't change anything."
Nora didn't know whether to laugh or cry at how matter-of-fact he sounded, but she had to admit he had a point.
Last time at the Whitmans, they waited a full day and night, only for River to snatch the pill from under their noses.
If they waited again this time, who knew what kind of disaster might strike?
"But..." Nora hesitated, recalling something. "Soren mentioned something to me earlier."
Hudson turned to look at her. "What is it?"
"He said... Spencer's expression looked odd when the Ivory Pill was mentioned."
Hudson raised an eyebrow. "Odd?"
"Yes." Nora nodded. "Soren said that when Adeline confirmed the Ivory Pill was with the Sawyers, Spencer's reaction was strange..."
Hudson tapped his fingers lightly against his knee.
He had noticed Spencer's reaction too, but hadn't thought much of it at the time.
"Let's ignore it for now," Hudson said smoothly. "The priority is getting the pill. Once we have it, nothing else matters."
...
Time ticked by.
Soon, a full day and night had passed.
There was still no word from Arthur or Archer.
Although Nora didn't show it on her face, the tension inside her wound tighter with every passing hour.
It wasn't until the agreed two-day deadline arrived that Arthur finally called.
"Mr. Lancaster..."
"Arthur, how did it go? Did you find the Ivory Pill?"
The line was silent for two seconds. "Sir, Adeline hasn't gone to retrieve the pill at all. She's spent the entire time drinking tea and admiring the flowers in the backyard. She hasn't stepped out... or seen any guests."
Hudson frowned, a strong sense of foreboding washing over him.
"Got it. I understand."
As soon as Hudson hung up, Nora asked anxiously, "What happened? What did Arthur say?"
Hudson set his phone down and looked at her. "Adeline probably doesn't have the Ivory Pill."
Nora froze. "...What do you mean?"
