Chapter 13 A Gift for the Engagement
Margaret’s arrival started a wave of whispers through the crowd.
Her father, Matthew Evans, noticed her too. Thinking about how she had run off with some random man and embarrassed the family, he couldn’t believe she dared to show
up here.
Matthew stood up quickly and pointed at her. “You disgraceful girl! How dare you come back? You’ve brought shame on our family!”
“Matthew, calm down. Let’s talk this through,” her stepmother, Nichole Evans, said softly as she patted his back. She was playing the role of the perfect, caring wife.
Looking at the incredibly beautiful girl in front of her, Nichole could hardly believe this was the same Margaret who used to wear thick glasses, hide behind her hair, and avoid eye contact with everyone.
“Maggic, where have you been these past few days? We’ve been searching everywhere for you,” Nichole said with fake concern.
“Where did you go?” Matthew tried to intimidate her with his commanding tone.
Nichole began to fake cry. “Maggie, that man–did he hurt you? You left with him for days. Did he do anything to you? Did he take advantage of you? If something happened, you can tell us. Don’t be scared. We’ll protect you.”
“You shameless girl! How could you do something so shameless?” Matthew’s anger, which had slightly cooled, instantly flared up again at her words.
Nearby guests looked at Margaret with clear disgust.
“I heard the Tucker family’s eldest daughter ran off with some country man.”
“Yeah, I heard that too. How disgusting.
“Well, it makes sense. Margaret grew up in the countryside. You can take the girl out of the
gutter,
but you
you can’t take the gutter out of the girl.”
“Look how Mrs. Evans is crying. Probably that man used Margaret and then threw her away.”
Nichole was skilled. With just a few sentences, she made everyone despise Margaret.
People looked at Margaret like she was trash, their faces full of scorn.
“Margaret, you… you’re finally back. I’ve been so worried about you,” Clara said, snapping her shock and putting on a concerned expression.

She had thought it through. That idiot would never figure out she was the one who had her sold. Margaret wasn’t smart enough for that.
But what shocked her was–wasn’t Margaret supposed to have broken arms and legs?
Margaret didn’t say anything. She just stared coldly at the two hypocritical women.
Her sharp, icy gaze made Clara and Nichole uneasy.
Since when did this idiot’s eyes become so piercing?
“I’m talking to you! Are you deaf?” Matthew yelled when Margaret remained silent, as if she had never considered him important from the start.
Margaret’s lips curved into a bright, stunning smile. She pulled over a chair and sat down right in the middle of the red carpet.
She crossed her long legs gracefully. She looked noble and elegant from head to toe, so beautiful it was almost painful to watch.
She couldn’t be bothered to explain anything to Matthew. He wouldn’t believe her anyway. In his heart, Clara was pure and perfect.
Margaret’s disregard and arrogant gesture made Matthew furious. “What are you doing? Your sister is having her engagement ceremony with Mr. Miller. Why are you blocking the way?”
“Watching the show, obviously. What else?” Margaret put on an innocent expression, but the smile on her lips was wicked.
“Oh, I almost forgot–people usually bring gifts to ceremonies. Clara, this is for you.”
Margaret threw a noose she had picked up from outside the hotel onto the red carpet. She did it boldly, without any fear.
“Oh my god, she is way too bold!!”
It was a direct challenge.
The guests in the hall were shocked.
Now things were getting interesting.
