Violet's POV:
I hesitated, but I just couldn't hold back. I followed him, staying a little way behind.
Near the banquet hall entrance, the elegant ball had fallen apart. Guests crowded into a circle, murmuring nonstop. Through the breaks between them, Sienna's icy blue dress caught the eye right away.
She was pulling against a tall guy with brown hair, dressed like a waiter. Suddenly, he lifted her straight into his arms. She struggled twice, more like acting than real resistance, then went still.
The man looked cold and unyielding. His gaze was sharp, almost predatory. Anyone who tried to step in froze under his stare, including the Snowveil Pack group, all of them looking furious.
Erik had already pushed his way to the front. To my surprise, he didn't jump in. He crossed his arms and watched calmly, even entertained, like he was enjoying a show.
His fiancée was being carried away in front of everyone, and that was how he reacted?
Sienna must have spotted Erik. Curled in the man's arms, she lifted a hand and waved at him. In the next moment, a large hand turned her face away, rough and uncompromising.
I saw Sienna puff out her cheeks and glare up at him, clearly refusing to back down.
The man carried her straight out of the hall, ignoring every stare around him. The Snowveil Pack members exchanged looks. After Sienna shot them a warning glance, none of them moved.
With the main figures gone, the whispers around us grew louder.
I stood there stiffly, my thoughts a mess.
What on earth just happened?
Erik turned around, squeezed through the crowd, and came back to me.
"Our elders arranged an engagement between our packs, but Sienna loves someone else. Her boyfriend is the captain of the Snowveil Pack guards. He's from a regular family, so they never made it public. She came to me and asked me to help her cause a scene to push him into action. In exchange, she'll convince her father to officially cancel our engagement."
He stopped for a second, then added in a serious tone, "I haven't been with her lately. Work at the hospital kept me busy."
It was way too much information all at once. My brain couldn't keep up.
So ... I misunderstood everything?
"Then why were you so harsh earlier?" I turned my head away. My voice was soft, but I still muttered stubbornly, "And you said I..."
Erik stepped closer. "I was harsh because I saw you dancing way too close to another guy." He took my hand and pressed it against his chest. "Right here. It hurt."
