(Author’s POV)
"Hospital? With Prof. Stephens?" William’s voice erupted as he got up from the couch at once.
Up until that point, just like last night, Myra and Wendy were thinking that she and Fabian were at the hospital for Jacob, but Yelena’s grim tone said otherwise. Myra walked straight towards her friend and supported her while the latter told them the story. Of course, not the full fledged tale, but with lots of omissions and editing.
With each word that she uttered, the Miracles kept losing shade off their faces, going from pale to paler to colourless.
"Why didn’t you call and tell us about it?" William questioned.
"My phone got wrecked, but I did give Wendy a call last night," Yelena said, her voice filled with exhaustion.
"I thought you were there because of Chairman Larson," Wendy said, her voice faded at the end, feeling guilty.
"Sorry~ .... I didn’t get to tell you that. Other guardians were lining up, so I had to cut it short," Yelena apologized.
"So, how is Fabian now?" Myra queried, her expression etched with nervousness, "And how did you get this injury?"
"Fabian~ .... he is~ ...." Yelena released a breath as everyone around her held theirs in their throat, waiting for her to finish. "He woke up around an hour and a half ago. Thankfully, the doctor checked, and there seems to be no issue. But he will need to be kept under observation for a day."
Listening to her, all the others released a unanimous breath of relief. Meanwhile, Yelena continued, "I just came for a quick shower. After changing my clothes, I will be heading back." She informed.
"I will come with you," Myra said straight away. "Me too," Wendy jumped in after her.
"NO~ .... YOU CAN’T," Yelena shot almost instantly, her voice a decibel higher than usual. Her unconventional behaviour caught everyone in the room by surprise. Watching their reaction, she realized and quickly covered, saying, "I~ .... mmm~ .... just .... you both have classes to attend. You have already missed a lot of classes lately. It wouldn’t be wise for you to miss anymore. Prof. Mitchell~ .... he is itching to give you a demerit point."
Wendy pouted, but understood her genuine concern, and so did William and Sandra. The only one who could tell something was off was Myra. She kept gawking at Yelena with a look full of skepticism. The way Yelena reacted just now, there was something she was trying to hide.
She muttered, "It’s okay. I will tell Prof. Mitchell about the situation. He will probably understand." Her eyes didn’t leave Yelena’s for even a second.
In a calm and composed tone, Yelena said, "That won’t be necessary. I will take you after you are done with all your classes, umm." Her eyelashes were fluttering rapidly.
And that sealed Myra’s suspicion. Yelena had this rare habit whenever she was brimming with anxiety. It didn’t always happen, but when she is under extreme pressure and stress. Myra pressed her lips tightly as she saw Yelena ascending the stairs.
After a few seconds, she mumbled, "I will just check her out," and walked straight towards Yelena’s room. She was about to knock, but the door was left slightly ajar, so she entered and shut the door quietly, locking it behind her.
Yelena was facing her wardrobe, her mind muddled with the thoughts of what had happened in the last twenty four hours.
"Yel, we need to talk," Myra’s voice came out steady, but it still startled the heck out of Yelena. She jumped up like a scaredy cat, her legs staggering and lot it’s footing.
Myra was swift and caught her in time, then helped her to a nearby chair. Yelena spoke, "Ra~ra, you scared the shit out of me."
"Sorry for spooking you, but I need to know something which only you can tell me," Myra said.
"Hmm? Go ahead?" Yelena said casually.
"Is everything fine at the hospital? Fabian is~ .... is he really~ ... totally alright?" Myra questioned.
"Of course. He is fine now," Yelena assured her. "I know you two are close. You must be feeling really anxious. I understand. But he is doing better."
"Then what are you trying to hide?" Myra came straight to the point. "I know you are, so bother denying it. Just out with it."
"Wh~ ... what are you saying, Myra? I~ .... There is nothing I am hiding," Yelena said, though her eyes did that same reaction.
"Don’t lie," Myra’s voice was collected. "Tell me, what’s going on? I can handle it."
