Adrian caught the look in Tristan’s bloodshot eyes and pinned him down before he could move.

He knew exactly what he was dealing with-the heat powder had hit Tristan hard, and if he didn’t bond soon, his primal core was gonna blow.

Since Tristan was Lucian’s younger brother, Adrian leaned in and kept his voice low. “Tristar, is there someone you want? You’ve gotta bond, and fast. Tell me who, and I’ll get you to her.”

Tristan’s gaze slid toward Gillian before he could catch himself, and Adrian’s stomach hit the floor.

Oh, hell no. Don’t tell me this idiot’s got a thing for Mrs. Cole.

They were trying to kill each other, like, five minutes ago. How does that even flip? What is wrong with him?

Even if she’s amazing, he can’t go there. Absolutely not.

Adrian sent every soldier around Tristan off to search for Camilla and stepped into his line of sight, blocking him. He dropped his voice to barely a breath.

“Tristan, I’m warning you right now. Don’t go sniffing where you can’t tread. I won’t be able to save you, and your brother won’t either.”

Tristan pulled his eyes back and shut them, and something flat and dead crept into his voice that he didn’t even hear himself. “There’s nobody. Take me to Elara. She might know what to do.”

Adrian let out a breath and dialed her immediately, running through Tristan’s condition. Elara was quiet for half a second, then laughed. “Send him my way. I can actually fix this.”

Adrian exhaled, but Elara told him to put the call on speaker so she could see Gillian.

“Her wrist terminal’s been dark. Someone might be jamming her signal. Is she hurt?”

“Mrs. Cole’s alright. She’s sitting up already. Tristan got it worse. Want me to send him straight to you?”

Adrian switched to speaker and gave Elara a full view.

She glanced at Tristan’s flushed face, decided he wasn’t about to keel over, and moved on. She wanted Gillian.

Lily had shifted into a giant bloom and tucked Gillian inside to keep her comfortable.

Gillian was just clutching a petal with her eyes locked on the corpse piles and not saying a word.

Elara said, her voice laced with concern, “Adrian, what’s wrong with her? Is she hurt? She looks wrecked. Why haven’t you brought her back yet?”

Adrian replied. “She won’t leave without the camellia. We’re still digging.”

Right then. Ruby tore open a parasite’s belly and pulled Camilla out. “Mom, I got her!”

The corpse had been crushed to the bottom of the heap.

Ruby was glowing as she hoisted Camilla over her shoulder and ran.

The second Gillian heard her voice, her whole face changed. “Ruby, get over here.”

“Coming.”

Once Camilla was in her arms, the tension finally dropped out of Gillian’s spine.

She checked Camilla over and found no heat powder on her-the bio-armor must’ve kept her sealed.

“Let’s head back,” Gillian said with relief.

Lily nodded, falling in beside Ruby.

Adrian suddenly got it. He understood exactly why Tristan had tripped and fallen. Gillian poured everything into those flower beasts, and Tristan had been starved for that kind of warmth since he was a kid. In a messed-up way, it made sense.

But Mrs. Cole is locked down tight. Commander does not share. Who the hell tries to snatch food out of his mouth? That’s a death wish.

Adrian asked, “Captain Sterling, we’ve got Camilla. We’re on our way back. Where are you? I’m bringing Tristan in.”

Elara saw Gillian was okay and her voice flipped to all business. “Fine. I’m on the Griffin Warship. Get Tris here now.” She ended the call.

Tristan kept his eyes shut and didn’t look at Gillian. He already knew she was fine. But his fist was clenched around something sharp that pressed into his palm, and his head was full of her anyway.

He jerked upright, his hair falling loose and messy, looking like he’d been kicked.

The thing in his hand bit into his skin.
