But Merrick’s hand just settled on the curve of her throat, and his breath came warm against her skin Gillian’s whole body locked.

His voice was low and thick, the kind that only came with real heat. “Gillian, it’s not your fault/I’m taking you back.”

He scooped her up like she weighed nothing, and she lifted her head, her eyes swimming. “Merrick, you really don’t blame me?”

“Blame you? I was scared of losing you. A few dead bodies don’t mean a thing. You’re my wife. They should be proud to die for you. Let’s go.”

“What about these parasites?” Her face twisted with hatred, like she had a genuine blood score to settle.

Merrick followed her eyes to the spot where he’d been standing moments before. “How do you want it done?”

“Hauling them back would be a pain,” she said, ducking her head like she was shy under his stare. “I saw a ravine back there. Cut their heads off and dump the bodies over the cliff. That’s the only thing that’ll do it for me.”

“Done,” Merrick said. “You heard her. Finish them off and shove them into the ravine.”

“Merrick, you’re so good to me,” she murmured.

The real Gillian, barely holding on, felt a sharp twist in her chest. That thing had stolen her face and was walking away with it. She shoved at the power inside her primal core, but Merrick’s footsteps only got fainter. Then the world flipped.

Please don’t let me die from a fall.

The parasite she was trapped inside tumbled and jolted to a stop, wedged against something solid.

The noise outside faded to nothing. The only thing she could move was her primal core, and after that tumble, even that had died.

That’s it. I’m finished.

Gillian wasn’t letting the blood skin eat her alive. If she was going down, she was taking this thing with her.

Then a strange smell hit, and her mind slipped before she could even try.

Didn’t even get to blow my own core. Damn!

Adrian stood back and watched as the beastmen doused the parasite corpses with high-concentration heat powder.

Then a blood-red sheet of skin crawled out not long after, pressing its hands to its face and coughing without stopping. Everyone stayed hidden and watched it haul itself free.

Chapter 245 Found Gillian

A second blood skin slithered out of another corpse nearby. The two scrambled toward each other slamming together and tangling up without a second of hesitation.

“Test it.” Adrian said quietly.

A single gray drop fell from above and burned a hole straight through the one on top. It shrieked and went rigid, scanning for danger.

The one beneath it was too deep in the frenzy to care and dragged its partner back down. The two skins fused within seconds.

“The purge works,” Adrian said. “Kill them now.”

He raised his hand, and a full basin of gray liquid dropped in a clean strike onto the fused mass.

The two humanoid shapes didn’t even get a scream out before half their bodies dissolved into sludge. Their reaching hands melted to blood.

What was left tried to run, and the beastman soldiers hit it with liquid nitrogen.

The thing was terrifying, but its defense was next to nothing, and the frozen chunk shattered under Adrian’s blade with a single swing.

Lily and Ruby shifted and sealed the pores on their petals. They pulled air through their roots from the soil so the heat powder hanging in the air wouldn’t touch them.

They tore open the two corpses the blood skins had crawled from. Gillian and Tristan lay inside, both out cold.

Lily’s roots curled around Gillian and lifted her with a gentleness that shook. “Mom, don’t be scared. It’s Lily. I’m here.”

Gillian surfaced slowly, and Lily’s voice was the first thing she heard.

“Lily, don’t cry,” she whispered.
