“Fine.” Gillian snapped. “Yeah, I love him because he’s a commander. Because he’s Merrick. Because he’s the one holding this whole wasteland together. Who else would I love? You?”
Tristan opened his mouth, and a low voice cut through from behind.
“Bad timing. You two finished?”
Merrick’s small flyer touched down beside her. At the sight of him, Gillian’s voice softened unconsciously -he’d promised to come for her, and he had.
“Merrick. I told you to stay on that thing.”
“Nothing’s more important than you.” He stepped off and pulled her in without slowing. “I had to see for myself.”
One glance at Tristan, and he knew exactly what was happening. That mithril chain in his hand was a real
eyesore.
Merrick held it together. If he let go now, he’d beat Tristan into the ground.
How dare he set his eyes on my woman?
Gillian went stiff for a breath, then sank into him.
The black griffin in her primal core stirred. Merrick’d triggered the bond on purpose so she’d know it was really him and not another fake.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, and her body finally let go.
Merrick felt the shift. He pulled back and pressed his palm to Gillian’s forehead. “What’s going on? You’re burning up.”
“Adrian used heat powder to kill the blood skins. I caught some.” Her head was already swimming. “Take me back. I can’t stay on my feet.”
Her hand gripped his arm, and the little sound that slipped out of her was cute and helpless at the same
time.
He tucked her head against his chest, scooped her up, and carried her.
“Merrick.” Tristan’s voice came from behind. “I love Gillian.” He knew this was his only shot-he had to say something.
“Shut up. I don’t wanna hear that again.” Merrick stopped, his gaze turning sharp as he looked at Tristan. His voice dropped cold, every word bitten off. “Tristan, know your place. Gillian is my mate. She’s not taking a second beastmate. For the history between us, I’ll let this slide. But if you cross this line again, I won’t.”

Gillian’s head was spinning. She barely caught any of it.

But Tristan staggered forward, as if the words hit harder than the heat. “What makes you better than me? Why does she only get to love you?”
His voice cracked, and the chain twisted in his grip.
He’s seriously arguing this? Hasn’t been hit enough.
Merrick didn’t answer. He set Gillian in the flyer and strapped her in, his hands gentle, like/she was malle of glass.
“Merrick, the heat powder’s messing with his head,” she murmured. “Don’t kill him.”
Gillian was exasperated. She hadn’t thought Tristan still felt that way about her.
“I’ve got it.”
He straightened and walked toward Tristan, every step a weight.
“Tris, you’re nineteen. Old enough.”
His voice had gone heavy, and the black griffin’s aura rolled out and slammed into Tristan, crushing him where he stood.
“Merrick, I’ll compete with you fair-” Tristan’s jaw was still set. He held up the chain. “I’ve got a token.”
