Chapter 199
Lysander dragged Alaric to a bar, where Alaric, feeling downhearted, drank as if quenching a thirst. Before long, he was thoroughly
inebriated.
Fumbling for his phone, Alaric insisted on calling Elowen. Dialing a number in a daze, he didn’t even wait for the call to connect before shouting into the phone, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t you see me? I’ve been devoted to you for over twenty years, can’t you spare me a single glance?”
Vespera, phone in hand, double–checked the number in utter confusion. “Alaric… have you been drinking too much…?”
Ever since they had celebrated Aurora’s birthday last year and attended the Fairbank Corp’s annual gathering, Vespera and Alaric had become acquainted.
“I’m drunk! And you don’t even care to check on me! Don’t I mean anything to you? Not even a little? How am I any less than Heath?” Alaric’s words slurred as he continued to wail.
“Alaric, where are you?” Vespera asked helplessly.
“Where else can I be? Anywhere’s fine if you’re with me!” Alaric babbled on.
Vespera had no choice but to call Cheryl, asking her to inquire with Zane about their usual drinking spots. Zane named a bar, and Vespera drove there.
At midnight, the bar was bustling. Vespera’s entrance drew many eyes. Petite and seemingly fragile, her usual heavy makeup gave her an alluring charm.
From upstairs came the noise of revelry. Vespera headed straight up, finding a door ajar. A man’s voice boomed from inside, “What’s wrong with me? So many women are waiting for me, yet Elowen won’t even glance my way!”
Lysander, also quite drunk, was cuddling a girl and kicked Alaric, saying, “Can’t you be a bit more dignified? Is Elowen worth your life?”
Alaric, holding a bottle, smashed it to the ground, scattering glass and spilling liquor.
Vespera hesitated, then entered to pull at Alaric. “You’ve had too much. Let’s go home.”
Too drunk to even look back, Alaric pushed Vespera away. She slipped on the wet floor, landing on the glass shards, her hand bleeding profusely.
Turning on the light, Vespera’s action startled everyone in the room.
The girl in Lysander’s arms gasped at the sight of Vespera’s bloodied hand. Lysander frowned, sending the girl to Alaric and asked in surprise, “Vespera, what brings you here?”
Vespera, smiling wryly, replied, “Alaric called me, thinking he was alone in his drunkenness. Since you are also here, I’ll be leaving.”
As Vespera turned to leave, Alaric grabbed her hand, causing her to cry out in pain. “Where are you going, Elowen? Can’t you look at me
for once?”
Lysander stood up, examining Vespera’s hand, lacerated by glass, worsened by Alaric’s grip.

Chapter 199
“Bring some ice water, he ordered a girl nearby.
The girl returned with water. Lysander helped Vespera sit and called his driver.
Looking at Alaric, he instructed, “Use the water to sober him up.”
The girl hesitated, knowing Alaric was an important guest she couldn’t offend.
“Just do it, I’ll take responsibility,” Lysander said impatiently.
Vespera coughed, “Let it be, let him sleep.”
Lysander’s driver arrived. Lysander then handed the girl a wad of cash, instructing, “Let him sleep here. When he wakes, send him to the hospital. And don’t take advantage of his drunken state.”
The girl, delighted with the money, tidied up the room and laid Alaric on the couch to sleep.
They arrived at the hospital in the dead of night. Despite not having had too much to drink, Lysander freshened up and attended to Vespera’s wounded hands.
Her hands, punctured with numerous shards of glass and further aggravated by Alaric’s harsh grip, were a gruesome sight, bloodied and mangled.
“Do you always follow orders so obediently?” Lysander asked with a hint of frustration. “Why can’t Aurora be as compliant as you?”
Vespera smiled wryly, “I knew Alaric, so I came. Had I known you were here, I wouldn’t have bothered.”
Lysander chuckled, “That guy, always stuck over Elowen. Frankly, I think you’re far better than her.”
Caught off guard, Vespera gave an awkward smile, “You misunderstand, Doctor. I’m no match for Elowen.”
Lysander, head bowed in concentration, tended to her wounds. “Misunderstand? Alaric is like a brother to me, and I don’t want him to fall for someone like that. The people around Aurora seem much more decent.”
