Chapter 200

Vespera stayed silent as Lysander meticulously removed the glass fragments. Her left palm bore a particularly deep cut, which Lysander numbed before stitching up and bandaging.

“All done, the bleeding’s stopped. It’s late; you should rest here tonight. I’ll change your dressings in the morning,” Lysander said, packing

up his tools.

“Thank you, doctor,” Vespera replied, her hands wrapped tight as she settled into the hospital bed to sleep.

The next morning, Alaric awoke with a splitting headache. As he attempted to rise, he collapsed with a groan.

Rubbing his head, he wondered why he was still in the lounge, questioning why Lysander hadn’t taken him home after he’d drunk too

much.

A young girl entered, “Sir, you’re awake? Dr. Lysander said to find him at the hospital when you’re up.”

“The hospital? Why should I go there?” Alaric asked, taking a sip of water.

“Last night, a lady came to pick you up, and you pushed her over. She got hurt, and Dr. Lysander took her to the hospital,” the girl explained.

“A lady? Did she mention her name?” Alaric inquired.

“No,” the girl shook her head, then added, “But you kept calling her ‘Elowen‘…”

Alaric froze. Elowen? Was Elowen here last night and got hurt?

Grabbing his coat, he drove straight to the private hospital owned by Lysander, in which both he and Heath were shareholders.

Upon reaching, Alaric barged into the director’s office, exclaiming, “Lysander! Vespera?”

He had thought the woman who came for him last night was Elowen, and that she was the one injured. But to his surprise, the girl receiving treatment from Lysander was Vespera Thornfield.

Why Vespera? Where was Elowen?

Vespera, still being attended to by Lysander, glanced at Alaric and nodded, “Good morning.”

Embarrassed, Alaric smiled awkwardly, “Good morning,”

He approached Lysander, “You told me to come here early, where’s Elowen?”

“Alaric, get a grip! You should be asking Heath about Elowen, not me!” Lysander retorted without even looking at him.

Frustrated, Alaric insisted, “Wasn’t Elowen the one at the bar last night?”

“It was Vespera! Wake up! Would Elowen come to a bar to pick you up? What are you dreaming about?” Lysander snapped.

“Vespera?” Alaric turned to Vespera, “You were at the bar last night?”

Vespera nodded, “Yes, you called me. I thought you were drinking alone, so I came.”

After finishing with Vespera’s dressings, Lysander instructed, “Don’t get them wet, avoid spicy food, and come daily for a change of dressings. We’ll remove the stitches in a week.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” Vespera said, standing up and awkwardly grabbing her bag with her arm. She smiled at a dazed Alaric, “Sorry to disappoint you. Next time, please check the number before you call.”

With that, she left Lysander’s office.

Lysander saw her out, returned, and kicked Alaric, “Are you so fixated on Elowen that you can’t appreciate Vespera’s kindness? She came to help you, and you pushed her into glass! Look at her hands, wrapped like dumplings. I expected you to come here to thank her, but all you do is babble about Elowen. Where’s your dignity?”

Alaric collapsed on the sofa, deeply disappointed. He had hoped it was Elowen who had come for him, but it was Vespera, and the letdown was immense.

“How are her hands?” Alaric asked, head down.

“Her palms were full of glass. You pressed her hands into it. She needed four stitches, but it’s not serious,” Lysander sighed.

“Alaric, enough is enough. You’ve been more than devoted to Elowen over the years. If she’s not yours, let it go.”

Alaric stood up, “I should go.”

Lysander, exasperated, watched Alaric leave and called Heath, “Heath, we need to do something about Elowen. Can you push her family to send her back to England? I’m at my wit’s end with Alaric’s gloomy moods. Every time I see him like this, it makes my blood boil!”

“Fine,” Heath replied, terse and forceful.

He was more agitated than Lysander, his tolerance for Elowen turning into a weapon against Aurora.

He never imagined Elowen would steal his key to find his house, nor did he know what she said or did to Aurora that left her so angry and upset.
