Probably, being pampered all his life, Maxwell had never been hit or scolded, which explained his shock when Aurora slapped him.
“Aurora, do you think I wouldn’t dare touch you?” Maxwell turned, his eyes cold as he stared at Aurora.
For a man like him, being slapped was a humiliation that could ignite a furious rage.
Aurora smirked, “Maxwell, I wish you would openly lay a hand on me. Stop pretending to be the good guy. I’ve never been afraid of being
your enemy!”
Maxwell, gripping Aurora’s waist, spun her around and pinned her against the pillar, his grip tightening, causing pain not just in her arm
but now also in her waist.
Before Maxwell could speak, Jay’s anxious voice came from behind, “Aurora!”
Seeing Jay was like seeing a savior for Aurora, who called out, “Jay! Help me!”
Maxwell frowned. Jay was just Aurora’s driver; he had no right to address her so familiarly.
Jay rushed over and pulled Maxwell away from Aurora. His strength wasn’t great, but his technique was effective, causing Maxwell to release Aurora due to the sudden pain in his shoulder.
Aurora, now free, quickly moved behind Jay. Maxwell, frowning, ordered, “Step aside!”
Jay shielded Aurora firmly, “Sir, protecting Aurora’s safety is my job.”
“You think I would hurt her?” Maxwell looked at Jay, a tall and handsome man with the air of a trained fighter.
“You would,” Jay answered without hesitation.
In Jay’s straightforward mind, if Aurora disliked Maxwell, it meant he was no good and capable of harming her.
Maxwell clenched his fists, teeth gritted, and asked, “What about Heath Fairbank?”
Jay shook his head decisively, “He won’t.”
Aurora chuckled. To Jay, this seemed only natural; so far, Heath hadn’t done anything to harm Aurora. In fact, he had helped her multiple times.
As Kieran put it, Heath was almost holding Aurora in his hands to protect her. So, of course, Heath wouldn’t harm her.
Maxwell, now furious, swung his right fist at Jay’s face.
But his punch was firmly caught by Jay, who accurately grasped Maxwell’s fist.
Maxwell was stunned. He had some training and was physically capable, so even though Aurora was well–exercised, she couldn’t match his
strength.
Chapter 212
But he never expected that his sudden punch would be precisely caught by Jay.
And judging by Aurora’s nonchalant expression, she seemed to have known that Jay wouldn’t get hurt.
Jay slowly released his grip, and Maxwell dropped his fist, looking at Jay, who just smiled without a word.
–
But Maxwell knew, that punch had made it clear he stood no chance against Jay.
Aurora looked disdainfully at Maxwell, “Don’t start fights carelessly. If you get hurt, I’d have trouble explaining it to Grandpa.”
With that, Aurora turned and left the gazebo, with Jay following.
Maxwell watched their retreating figures. Jay wasn’t following Aurora; he walked beside her, chatting and laughing, more like friends than a recently met heiress and her bodyguard.
Aurora playfully punched Jay, “Where were you? Why didn’t you come sooner?”
Jay shrugged, “I went to grab something to eat. When I realized you hadn’t returned, I came looking for you.”
Aurora said helplessly, “A little later, and Maxwell would have broken my arm.”
Jay grinned, “No worries, I’d break his to compensate you.”
Aurora: “…”
Man, is that really the point?
Back at the banquet hall, Aurora found Vespera and asked, “Weren’t you supposed to join me in finding Jay? Where did you run off to?”
Vespera pointed towards Alaric and spread her hands in resignation, “He dragged me off to dance.”
Aurora giggled mischievously, “You and Alaric? Are you two…”
“Don’t get the wrong idea!” Vespera waved her hands dismissively, “He was just trying to avoid Elowen, and I was merely a decoy.”
Aurora clicked her tongue, “Then don’t be a decoy next time. Elowen is crazy; what if she does something to you?”
Vespera laughed, “I’m not afraid of her. Besides, it’s fun to irritate her a bit for you.”
Aurora also laughed and offered Vespera a snack, “Well done, here’s a reward!”
Vespera took the snack with her mouth, speaking indistinctly, “What did Jay say? Where did the gift come from?”
Aurora’s cheeks flushed as she nibbled on a snack, “Heath arranged it.”
“Oh my goodness…” Vespera looked at Aurora, smiling knowingly, a look of ‘our girl is growing up.
“Hey! Stop looking!” Aurora covered her face, embarrassed by Vespera’s gaze.
Chapter 212
Vespera playfully hit Aurora, “Heath really got to you, making you blush like this!”
Aurora, head bowed, replied helplessly, “He just helped me out, that’s all…”
Vespera grinned, “His reputation in the city is well–known for being aloof from women. Now, he’s clearly got you hooked. I call dibs on being your bridesmaid!”
Aurora pushed her playfully, “Nonsense! What bridesmaid!”
Aurora grabbed Vespera and playfully smacked her forehead, “Wait until you and Alaric become an item, then I’ll be your bridesmaid!”
Vespera shrugged helplessly, “Me and Alaric? Impossible.”
“Why? Still waiting for that guy abroad?” Aurora inquired.
Vespera had once mentioned a childhood sweetheart, much like Alaric’s unrequited love for Elowen. Vespera had been steadfast in her affection for this man for over a decade, to no avail.
Vespera forced a smile, “Something like that. So, my feelings towards Alaric are purely empathetic, nothing more.”
Aurora wrapped an arm around Vespera, comforting her, “It’s okay. Alaric is deeply in love with Elowen, and I wouldn’t want you to get involved with him.”
Vespera nodded in agreement.
Meanwhile, Evelyn, aiming to please Elowen, had arranged a ticket to the U.S. for her, encouraging Elowen to pursue Heath.
Elowen was hesitant; after her last uninvited visit, Heath had changed the locks and firmly refused any collaboration with her. He even called her family, suggesting it was time for Elowen to return to England for marriage and childbirth.
Clearly, Heath wanted to push her away, preferably to England, never to see her again.
All this because she had intruded on his residence and undermined Aurora.
Now, Elowen wondered if her unsolicited trip to the U.S. would provoke Heath into sending her directly to England.
Elowen accepted the ticket from Evelyn, who saw her as a potential future wife for Heath. That was a status Elowen didn’t want to lose.
But whether to go or not was her decision. Even if she didn’t, Evelyn wouldn’t know,
Finally, around eleven, the banquet ended.
Vespera had come with Alaric, who naturally escorted her home.
Aurora returned to her room, kicked off her high heels, removed her makeup, and bathed, finally settling comfortably into bed. It was then she remembered she had impulsively booked a flight to the United States for the next morning.
Initially, it was a spur–of–the–moment decision to defy Maxwell, but recalling his words about Heath unsettled her. Aurora turned over in bed, pondering, and decided it was best to go and see for herself.

It seemed that only by seeing Heath could she find peace of mind.
Her thoughts drifted back to the last gunfight in the U.S. After all, Heath was a member of the KING organization, not just a simple businessman. Danger was always lurking around him.
The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became, tossing and turning throughout the night until she finally drifted into a fitful sleep in the early hours of the morning.
