Chapter 240
Caught up in self–reproach, Zane hadn’t thought to check Tim’s “body.” He leaned over, felt Tim’s chest–no blood–and then his neck, where a strong pulse throbbed with life.
Zane, wiping his face, chuckled, “If he’s not dead, why is he lying there motionless?”
The instructor tossed him a bullet, explaining, “Tranquilizer round, mixed with red dye. How else do you think we’d scare you kids straight?”
Zane then remembered the camouflaged figure from before, asking, “They aren’t a terrorist group?”
The instructor, somewhat amused, clarified, “Terrorist group? That was Joe from your squad!”
Zane was baffled, ‘So what was this drill? The instructors play the hawks and we’re the chicks?”
The instructor shot him a look, “Enough talk, get down there and regroup.”
Zane returned the bullet and hurried down to join the others. Learning that Tim was fine, he couldn’t have been happier.
Soon, the “deceased” comrades began to return, one after another. After a debriefing and some praise from the instructors, everyone was dismissed.
Tim nudged Zane, teasing, “Heard you cried when you thought I was dead?”
Zane kicked him lightly, retorting, “Nonsense! Why would I cry?”
Tim burst into laughter as he jogged away, “Don’t deny it! The instructor told me! The whole camp’s talking about it!”
Zane was left speechless.
The next day, Heath and Aurora arrived to pick up Zane. Heath had come along, concerned about Aurora’s injury.
Aurora, waiting at the gate, joked with Heath, “Feels like mom and dad picking up their son from school, doesn’t it?”
Heath, preoccupied with some papers, replied dryly, “My son wouldn’t be as foolish as Zane.”
Aurora was left without a comeback.
Before long, Zane emerged, noticeably tanned and no longer the pale scholar he once was, but radiating a robust masculinity.
Several men who had grown close to Zane during his time there came to see him off, while a few instructors greeted Heath.
Zane looked around, asking, “Where’s Tim, Instructor? Why aren’t they here?”
Tim scratched his head awkwardly, admitting, “Well, you kind of unloaded a whole clip into Instructor yesterday. That tranquilizer’s going to keep him asleep until tomorrow.”
Zane was dumbfounded.

Chapter 240
After the pleasantries, Zane got into the car. Aurora turned to him with a smile, asking, “How was the drill yesterday?”
Zane glared at her, “Why didn’t you pick me up yesterday?”
Aurora shrugged nonchalantly, “Wasn’t it a perfect opportunity for you to experience camaraderie? I heard you even shed a few tears?”
Zane was at a loss for words.
So the whole world knew about it now? Was his dignity not a concern?
When Zane returned to the set, his arrival caused quite a stir.
The old Zane was just another pretty face in the entertainment industry, often criticized for lack of distinctiveness.
But the new Zane, fresh from the military camp, was like a soldier incarnate. Even in casual clothes, he carried himself with an upright,
soldierly posture.
His tanned complexion added a rugged, steadfast charm to his looks.
Once in costume, his handsome features coupled with a piercing gaze perfectly embodied Gideon’s character, as envisioned in the latter part of the story.
Even Soraya, and the assistants on set, blushed at the sight of the now even more dashing Zane.
Aurora smiled proudly, “Finally, it’s all come together. Zane really does look quite handsome now.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Heath glanced up at her.
Aurora, feeling a chill, quickly shook her head, “No! Of course, you’re the handsomest! Zane’s just a kid!”
Heath gave her a sidelong glance, “You’re not much older.”
Aurora, a bit flustered, thought to herself, “That’s called being young! Heath is just jealous!”
