Aurora forcefully pushed Yvonne aside, exclaiming, “Jay! Take her away!”

Jay kicked away the servants staring at him, lifting Vespera from the ground, and moved to Aurora’s side.

Aurora, dismissing Yvonne without a word, followed Jay out to the car. She checked Vespera’s neck, finding her pulse and breathing normal, yet worry clouded her features. “Jay, head to Lysander’s,” she urgently commanded.

Jay sped through the streets to the hospital. Aurora had already called Lysander, who took charge upon their arrival.

Within mere minutes of entering the examination room, Lysander emerged, reassuring, “She’s fine, just drugged with a sedative. A good

sleep, and she’ll recover.”

Aurora breathed a sigh of relief, following Lysander to his office. She inquired, “Do you know what’s happening with the Thornfield

family?”

Lysander, shedding his lab coat, asked, “What aspect are you referring to?”

“I can’t pinpoint, but Yvonne was there when I visited the Thornfields today. Is Yvonne a member of the Thornfield family?” Aurora

pressed.

Lysander paused, then revealed, “Yvonne Thornfield? The Thornfields‘ elusive daughter is Yvonne?”

Aurora, puzzled by Lysander’s words, listened as he elaborated, pouring her a glass of water. “The Thornfields had a daughter, shrouded in mystery, never seen in high society. Vespera Thornfield, a child born out of wedlock, was brought into the Thornfield household around the age of five or six. The specifics elude me, but Yvonne’s connection to the Thornfields is indeed surprising.”

“Rumors hinted at Yvonne having powerful backing, yet no evidence ever surfaced. If the Thornfield family was behind her, one would

expect her to thrive in the entertainment industry,” Aurora mused, perplexed.

Lysander, sipping his water, advised, “The Thornfield family is complicated. You should ask Vespera directly, especially since she was drugged at her own home. It’s imperative for future precautions.”

Aurora nodded, engaging in further conversation before visiting Vespera’s room. Vespera, caught unprepared, hadn’t worn makeup, revealing a paler and frailer appearance than usual.

Aurora stayed by Vespera’s side all day, waiting for her awakening. When Vespera finally stirred and saw Aurora, she sighed in relief,

asking, “Aurora, did you save me?”

Aurora nodded, concerned, “Are you feeling alright now?”

“I’m fine, thanks to you,” Vespera gratefully responded.

‘Let’s not dwell on this; I’ll take you back to your apartment. If news of your hospitalization leaks, the media will swarm this place, Aurora suggested, instructing Jay to handle the discharge.

Vespera agreed, and they left for her apartment with Jay ensuring their safety.

Once home, Aurora made sure Vespera was comfortably in bed and fetched her water, pressing, “Isn’t it time you told me what’s going

on?”

Vespera, holding the glass, took a moment before smiling weakly, “As close as we are, I should have told you sooner. I just don’t know

where to start.”

“From the beginning,” Aurora insisted, looking at her friend determinedly. “Only then can I protect you.”

Vespera, with a smile tinged with irony, nodded and began, “You’ve heard of the Thornfield family, a dynasty in politics. Yvonne, my half- sister, was their only child. My father, a politician, never intended to acknowledge me, his illegitimate daughter. How could he bear the stain of having a child out of wedlock? Everything changed when Yvonne was seriously injured, losing a lot of blood. She has a very rare RH–negative blood type, and it just so happened that my blood matched hers. I thought donating blood once would be the end of it, but after my mother passed away early, I was taken into the Thornfield family. From that moment on, I became Yvonne’s personal blood bank. Whenever she was injured, fell ill, or needed a transfusion, even just to store blood for future use, I had to step up.”

Aurora was stunned. She thought Madeline’s treatment of her was cruel, drugging her into stupidity, but Vespera’s life sounded even more tragic. A walking blood bank, forever a lifeline for Yvonne, how could her father do such a thing?

Vespera’s smile grew more sardonic as she continued, “He never saw me as his daughter. In his eyes, I was a disgrace, an illegitimate child to be kept out of sight. Yvonne was the treasured daughter of the Thornfield family. If it weren’t for my matching blood type with Yvonne, he would have never taken me back. You can imagine what followed. Mrs. Thornfield couldn’t stand the sight of me, a bastard child, and Yvonne couldn’t bear having me as the second heiress. They bullied me, both openly and in secret.”

“How are you holding up? Can you endure their mistreatment?” Aurora asked, knowing all too well the taste of being manipulated by such vile mother–daughter pairs. Hadn’t she herself been made a fool for over a decade?

Vespera shook her head slightly, “I’m managing. I was premature at birth and have always been frail. Plus, years of donating and drawing blood haven’t helped. I’m not in great health, but I try not to show it. I cover up with heavy makeup to hide how weak I really am, which you saw today–pale and frightening.”

Holding Vespera’s frail hands, Aurora’s heart ached for her. “You should have told me earlier. How could you suffer in silence and let Yvonne bully you like this?”

Vespera smiled through her tears, “Maybe because I can’t sever ties with my family as decisively as you can. I’ve always held onto a sliver of hope. My father, my only kin. I thought if I did everything he wanted, saved Yvonne, studied business at the Imperial University, he might finally recognize me as his daughter. Maybe see that his daughter wasn’t so inadequate after all…”
