Old Mrs. Wynn struggled to open her eyes. Looking at her granddaughter, who was crying her heart out, her eyes were filled with an overwhelming ache and reluctance to leave.
She tried to lift her hand to touch her granddaughter’s face, but she had no strength.
She could only force a weak smile, her voice as faint as a thread. “Silly child… my time is up. My organs… my organs are failing. Not even a miracle worker… could save me…”
She looked at Serena, her face full of pain. “All these years, it’s thanks to you… thanks to you giving me massage and brewing my medicine that I’ve lived so many extra years.”
“These last few years were stolen time. They let me stay with you a little longer… see you grow up, so accomplished. Grandma is… content.”
Serena quickly pressed Old Mrs. Wynn’s hand to her own cheek.
Old Mrs. Wynn took a breath, her fingers gently stroking her granddaughter’s tear-streaked face. “Serena, the one I worry about most… is you…”
“Listen to Grandma. After you go back to the Wynn family, don’t you let yourself be mistreated…”
“Your mother… she dislikes me, and that’s why she dislikes you… It’s not your fault. After I’m gone, maybe she’ll be better to you…”
Old Mrs. Wynn closed her eyes for a long moment, resting, before continuing. “Promise me, if you go back to that house and feel wronged… then don’t worry about family ties. Your happiness, your joy, that’s the most important thing… that’s what Grandma wants to see more than anything…”
With great effort, she fumbled under her pillow for a carefully wrapped object. She handed it to Serena, her frail fingers gripping Serena’s hand tightly.
Her eyes held a final moment of clarity and resolve. “This… is the only thing I can leave for you. Take it, and don’t you dare give it to your parents. This is what I’m leaving for you, and you alone. You can’t give it to anyone…”
“No matter how much your parents pressure you, this belongs only to you. As long as you have this… in the future… even if you leave the Wynn family, you’ll be able to live well…”
“Grandma…!”
Serena watched as the kind but withered old woman slowly closed her eyes in front of her.
