Fiona, who had been keeping an eye on them, couldn't hold back any longer and immediately spoke up to defend her young master. "Miss Lancaster, Mr. Blackwood was up almost all night, too. He finished all his work ahead of schedule just for today…"
"Fiona."
Nicholas Blackwood stopped Fiona, shaking his head at her.
Fiona's mouth moved, and with a sigh, she went back to organizing the clothes.
"Don't listen to her nonsense." Nicholas pressed his thin lips together, and then his well-defined fingers slowly, one by one, released her wrist. "Go on and handle your business. Don't worry about me."
The tone he used was the very definition of playing the victim.
The way his fingers lingered before finally letting go felt like a silent plea, mirroring the look of a loyal dog desperate for its owner to stay.
Serena looked at Nicholas. The man's cold, almost otherworldly handsome face was indeed shadowed with dark circles under his eyes.
He clearly hadn't slept all night.
Something soft pricked at Serena's heart, sending a warm, fluttering tingle through her chest.
Her heart softened, and her tone gentled as well. "I really do have something urgent to attend to. I'm on a tight schedule, so I can't stay."
After a pause, she added, "I'll try to finish everything today so I can stay home tomorrow."
The word "home" made Nicholas's eyes light up.
All the unhappiness in his heart was instantly soothed and sent soaring.
Especially after hearing what Serena said.
He thought she was feeling sorry for him for staying up all night, that her heart was softening toward him, that she pitied him.
When a woman starts to pity a man…
It could very easily turn into love!
But just as his heart began to soar, he heard Serena's cool voice continue, "Nicholas, you really don't need to sacrifice your own time or disrupt your own schedule."
