However, as soon as the call went through, he heard the automated voice on the other end: "We're sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy."
It was obvious. His number had really been blocked.
Patrick's face turned ashen. He snatched Marianne's phone.
He scrolled through her contacts for a while but couldn't find Serena's name.
He looked up in frustration. "Which one is Serena's number?"
Marianne pouted. "I never saved her number..."
"She was your daughter for twenty years and lived under the same roof with you for four, and you don't even have her contact information?!" Patrick snapped.
He completely forgot that the only reason he had Serena's number was because the late Mrs. Wynn had saved it in his phone for him. Otherwise, he, her own father, wouldn't have had it either.
Marianne's lips trembled as if she wanted to say something, but she saw Patrick take his phone and start manually entering the number into her phone, digit by digit.
This time, the call went through.
Patrick's tone immediately switched to a fawning one. "Serena, it's Dad. Listen to me..."
*Beep!*
The ferocious, murderous expression on his face scared Marianne into silence. She shrank back and took two steps away.
Hailey quickly steadied Marianne.
She stole a glance at the furious Patrick, feeling her mother's body trembling slightly as she held her. She took a deep breath and, forcing a calm tone, said, "Dad, Mom, please stop fighting... I... I might have a way to help the family get through this crisis."
Patrick was already fuming, and the sight of Hailey only made him angrier. When he looked at Hailey's face, which could only be described as pretty in a simple way, and realized it didn't even qualify to be compared to Serena's, he felt even more suffocated.
He snapped irritably, "You? What can you do? It'll be enough if you don't make things worse! Your face can't compare to Serena's, and you're not as useful. You finally got involved with the Cole family, only for that bastard Adrian Cole to drag us into this mess! I think back then we never should have..."
He didn't finish his sentence. Patrick realized his words, spoken in the heat of anger, were a bit too harsh.
