"But... we're living human beings! We're real people!" Lydia cried out, the thought of Faith crossing her mind.
It had been two months. Faith could have completely become... a lab rat.
Lydia sobbed uncontrollably.
Caleb took a deep breath and crouched down to help Lydia up. "Stop crying, Lydia. It won't do any good."
"Tears won't solve anything," he continued.
"And they definitely won't bring anyone back."
Lydia looked up, choking on a sob, her tear-streaked face staring blankly at Caleb.
Caleb turned to Serena, his jaw clenched, his gaze filled with a new, unwavering resolve. "Captain, what's our next move?"
He had seamlessly transitioned from calling her by her full name to "Captain."
In his heart, he had completely accepted her leadership.
Serena countered with a question of her own. "What do you want to do?"
Caleb and Lydia exchanged a glance.
They tightened their fists. "We want to expose the Doyle family for what they really are!"
"Whether those students who went 'abroad' are still alive or not, we need to reveal the truth," Caleb said firmly. "We need everyone to know that Doyle Pharmaceuticals is a murderous corporation!"
"We can't let anyone else become their test subjects," Lydia added.
"We are living human beings, not data points or lab rats!"
Serena's lips curved into a slow, approving smile, her eyes filled with appreciation. She nodded. "Exactly."
"You all fought so hard, clinging to your dreams and pulling yourselves out of the fire time and time again," Serena said smoothly.
"You worked tirelessly to escape the Backwoods and build a better life."
"You absolutely will not become their test subjects."
"Since the Doyle family treats you as prey... you will become the hunters."
They froze, their faces flushing crimson. "T-Take our clothes off? Captain... we're decent people..."
Serena walked over to the medical cabinet and retrieved a specialized set of micro-needles.
Hearing their stammering.
She walked back over. "What are you thinking? If you want to compete, we need to fix your bodies first."
"You've been taking Cerebro-Flex for too long. The toxins have built up in your systems, which is why your reactions have been so severe lately."
"Without the Lazarus Sequence to detoxify you, you won't stand a chance of winning."
Realization dawned on them, and they quickly sat down, their faces still burning.
Since the treatment required access to their backs and arms.
Serena drew a privacy curtain between them.
Her hands moved with blinding speed, applying the treatment faster than the eye could follow.
