Miss Josefina: Nobody's Princess novel Chapter 1038

Who would've guessed that bench was so worn out, with not even a backrest to lean on? Josefina heard a sudden "Ah!" and watched as Leah toppled over, legs sticking up like a flipped-over beetle.

Oliver just stood there, at a loss for words. "Seriously, with moves like that, she thinks she's ready for the assassin gig?" he finally said, shaking his head.

Josefina couldn't help but burst into laughter, clutching her stomach. "Oh my gosh, I can't take it, I'm laughing so hard I'm crying!"

Leah scrambled to her feet, trying to pull herself together, but her once-elegant appearance was now a complete mess. The more she thought about it, the more her frustration grew.

"What's so funny, huh?" Leah snapped.

Josefina, still chuckling, replied, "Honestly, it's that hairstyle of yours. It's quite the look."

Leah's hair was sticking out at odd angles, her bangs were wild, making her look absolutely ridiculous. Feeling utterly humiliated, Leah regretted ever taking on this job; it was a total disaster.

"Get out! Both of you, get off my property!" she yelled, her face flushed with anger.

Josefina got up, with Oliver giving her a hand. "You act like I love hanging out here. Leah, you're not exactly getting any younger. You can't be an assassin forever. Plus, with your track record, you're not exactly setting yourself up for a cushy retirement. Maybe it's time to think about a new career?"

Seeing that they weren't going to get any useful intel, Josefina decided it was time to head out. She planned to dig deeper into things once she was back online.

As Oliver escorted Josefina out, he shot Leah a look so sharp it could cut through steel, making her shiver and quickly look away.

In the car, Josefina settled in as Oliver started driving. "How did she even end up as an assassin?" Oliver wondered aloud. Was the bar really set that low these days?

"She got lucky," Josefina explained. "In the beginning, she just tagged along, picking up the leftovers. They even nicknamed her the Queen of Cleanups. She had a great mentor who always had her back, but after her mentor passed away, she was too scared to take on missions. Just staying alive was enough."

As they say, the differences between people often begin at birth, and for assassins, there's a whole other set of lines drawn.
