Her life was really tough!
Luke chimed in, “So from now on, you better treat my boss and me with a little more respect. We did save your life, after all.”
Leah just stared at him, lost for words.
Where was her trusty five-foot sword when she needed it? She’d let Luke run just shy of five feet before she’d take a swing at this chatterbox! Leah was fuming inside.
“Luke, I think I heard something from your kitchen. Are you cooking? Better go check what's on the stove.”
Luke sighed, “It’s her medicine! She’s always brewing it at home, and the whole place reeks!”
Resigned, Luke headed into the kitchen, carefully closing the door, worried that the smell might bother Josefina.
Leah gritted her teeth in annoyance. “Witch, your sidekick is just as annoying as you!”
Josefina raised an eyebrow, “But he did save your life.”
Leah held her tongue, not wanting to have another word with Josefina.
Josefina insisted, “Now, tell me, what did the person who hired you look like? Did you get a good look at them?”
Josefina knew Leah well. Despite not being the strongest, Leah had an eye for detail, always picking up on things others might miss.
Leah didn’t hold back, “It was a woman, and she looked like she was having a rough time.”
She continued, “She stabbed me, and I heard her speaking Japanese to her associate before they tossed me into the river.”
Another tie to that country. Josefina remained unfazed and calm.
“Do you have any idea, Fiona? Who did you manage to upset?”
Josefina replied, “Who I’ve crossed isn’t your concern. The more you know, the riskier it gets, right?”
Her last word, “right,” made Josefina think fondly of Oliver, and a sweet smile crept onto her face.
Leah, noticing Josefina’s change in expression, teased, “Having a man really changes everything, huh?”
