Cash was absolutely livid. How could they keep such a huge secret from him?
With no way around it, Cash and Caleb had to spill the beans.
“Logan’s condition hasn’t gotten any better. Actually, it’s worse now. And, well... Josefina’s got something to do with it.”
Cash was floored. Josefina? Their miracle worker Josefina?
“Are you sure about this?” Cash asked, still in disbelief.
Caleb let out a long sigh, “Yeah, we’re sure. It’s all true. Josefina tried to help Logan, hoping to cure him. But instead of getting better, things just spiraled. We all knew Logan's illness was a tough break, but Josefina blames herself. She's been carrying that guilt around, doing everything she can to make it right.”
Preston added, “Josefina's been through the wringer over this. You know how impossible Logan’s case is. It’s like trying to climb Everest without any gear. We've told her it's not her fault, but she just can't let herself off the hook.”
Cash, now understanding the whole picture, sighed deeply. “Poor Josefina.”
The three of them sighed together, feeling the weight of Josefina’s burden.
They didn’t notice Logan in the bed, who had opened his eyes and heard everything.
Was his mentor's kindness just out of guilt?
Suddenly, Logan felt like he didn’t deserve to live. Maybe it was time to end it all.
...
Later that night, Luke swung by to pick up Josefina, taking her to a house.
When she opened the door, she wasn’t surprised by who she saw. But Leah sure was.
“You saved me,” Leah said, disbelief coloring her voice.
She thought she was done for, yet here she was, saved by none other than her rival, Josefina.
“Leah, glad to see you’re still with us.”
Leah gave a bitter smile, “Yeah, I’ve just had a close call with death, no turning back now.”
