Josefina let out a soft chuckle, finding her aunt and uncle rather amusing. "They really don't get me. If I hadn't put in the effort with my studies, how would I have gotten into the University of Melbourne? It's all because I worked my butt off."
"I know, our Mandy is the very definition of hardworking," her companion chimed in.
The two of them settled in as the folks behind them began to register. Josefina had created a special badge for the medical club, which would let members scan their way in. Once the club was fully up and running, she planned to replace the doors with ones from her own company, requiring both the badge and a fingerprint for entry.
After wrapping up these tasks, the clock ticked over to noon. Josefina got a call from the police—Joelle wanted to see her.
Mandy, clearly annoyed, retorted, "Don't go see her. Who does she think she is? The queen of everything, expecting everyone to cater to her whims?"
Josefina paused, thinking it over, and then spoke quietly, "I should at least hear her out. Joelle has some history with Shay; maybe she can give us some information."
With the trail running cold, Josefina was eager to gather evidence and revisit the case. "Alright, you might have a point," Mandy conceded. "I'll come with you. If she goes off the rails, I'll have your back."
Linking arms, Mandy accompanied Josefina. Josefina smiled warmly, reflecting on how quickly time had passed. Mandy had come a long way, from being confrontational to genuinely supportive. Time really does smooth out the rough edges, she thought.
...
Joelle had been locked up for a day, and it was taking a toll on her mental state. When she saw Josefina and Mandy enter, her eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope. "Josefina, you're here." Joelle's voice was weak.
Mandy was startled, "Josie, you might want to keep your distance. She looks like a starved wolf, and we're the lambs."
Josefina laughed, "Relax, we've got the officers here to protect us."
