Josefina was startled by how quickly things had gone sideways. She’d barely managed to get up when Luke’s face popped back onto the screen.
“Sorry, Boss—I dropped my phone. Total butterfingers,” Luke said, flashing a sheepish grin.
Josefina let out a shaky breath. “You scared the hell out of me. For a second, I thought something actually happened.”
“We’re fine, I promise. You get back to what you were doing. I haven’t even eaten yet, so I’m gonna grab some food.”
Luke hung up and slumped to the floor, still jumpy from what had just happened. He glanced at the closed door across the room; his heart was still racing.
The truth was, things had almost gone off the rails. Logan had suddenly lost control, and in the chaos, Luke had rushed in and locked them inside. Quick thinking had saved them from Josefina seeing the whole mess.
Luke got up and walked over, tapping gently on the door. “Logan, are you alright?”
A strained voice came through. “I’m fine. Just… don’t tell my mentor, okay?”
Logan sounded miserable, which only made Luke worry more. He grabbed his phone and called Percy, asking him to come over and help Logan.
…
After dinner, Livia walked out with Cash and saw him off. When she stepped into the parking lot, she noticed someone standing under the streetlight—a figure that felt both familiar and distant.
Finley looked thinner now, his coat hanging almost to his knees as he approached her.
“It’s been a while,” Finley said, breaking the silence.
Livia just nodded, her voice calm. “Yeah. It has.”
They stood there for a moment, the streetlight cutting a sharp line between them. Finley could see in her eyes—cold, distant, no warmth left at all.
He knew she’d never forgive him.
Still, just being able to say hi like this felt like a small relief.
Finley started to say something else, but Livia beat him to it. “I have to go.”
She walked around him, found her car, and drove off into the night.
