On the video, Sandi leaned in, whispering to Lydia as they moved forward together. Josefina noticed right away—Sandi kept edging ahead, her steps so tiny and careful that if you weren’t watching closely, you’d think someone was just pushing her along.
But there was something seriously off about Sandi’s face. She looked tense, almost like she was fighting against something as she walked. Her arm swung up, sliced through the air, then snapped right back down. The whole thing was oddly smooth, almost rehearsed.
Josefina caught a quick spark of satisfaction on Sandi’s face—a total shift from the gloom she’d seen earlier.
“Boss, Sandi’s acting weird. Sending you the video now,” Luke messaged.
Josefina replied, “Already saw it.”
Luke stared at his phone. He was too slow. Again. Damn it. He could never beat her to anything.
“Boss, your eyes are way sharper than mine,” he admitted, a little sheepish.
“Don’t put yourself down, Luke. I just got lucky and clicked in at the right moment. That’s all,” Josefina replied.
“You know, you can never really tell what someone’s thinking. Sandi looks harmless, but she’s ruthless—just like her parents.”
Luke had always had a bad feeling about Makiko and Cole. Something about them just felt… dangerous beneath the surface.
“Keep following up on this. And be careful, alright?”
“Don’t worry, I will. Promise.”
Josefina always reminded him to stay safe, and Luke never minded. It meant she cared.
She hung up, but the question gnawed at her: Why would Sandi ever want to hurt her? Was Sandi doing someone else’s dirty work? And if so, who could it be? Deep down, Josefina already knew the answer. She didn’t even need to say the name.
