Alivia gave a sheepish smile, "Hattie, did Lena really try to poison you?"
"Of course not. If she had, do you think I'd just let her stay? You know me; I'd never treat Lena poorly just because Josie showed up. You've seen how I've cared for her all these years."
Alivia nodded silently, knowing her daughter well.
"Alright, take it easy and get some rest. Josie skipped her meal to rush over here for you. You know your health. No matter what happens, I hope you can come home and not be a burden to Josie."
As Hattie got up to leave, Alivia watched her go, feeling an unusual heaviness in her heart.
...
Josefina barely touched her breakfast; she was running late for school.
"Hold up, Josie, let me drive you," Hattie called out.
"No need, I already called for a ride."
Josefina dashed out and hopped into Oliver's car.
Oliver handed her a bag, "Got you some breakfast."
It was only because Oliver mentioned breakfast that she hadn’t eaten much.
Opening the bag, Josefina pulled out a breakfast sandwich with a delicious chicken cutlet inside.
Oliver opened a bottle of almond milk and handed it to Josefina, "It's the perfect temperature, try it."
"How do you know it's just right?" Josefina asked, puzzled.
Oliver grinned, "I tasted it."
"…"
Oliver leaned in, locking eyes with her, "Josie, are you grossed out by me?"
Josefina leaned back, feeling her heart race. Oliver's handsome face was inches from hers.
As Oliver moved closer, Josefina bashfully averted her gaze, "Oliver, maybe not now."
"Josie, it seems like you're avoiding me."
"I'm not."
Losing her appetite, Josefina noticed the mark on her neck in the car mirror.
"Oliver, how am I supposed to go to school like this? Look what you've done."
Oliver glanced at her briefly before focusing back on the road.
"Josie, I'm sorry, I didn't think it would happen like this."
"You're quite the charmer, pretending you didn't know. Seems like you're a pro."
Oliver couldn't help but laugh, "I guess I’m a natural."
"Now what? I can't go to school with this showing."
Realizing she had no makeup with her, Josefina felt stuck.
"Why don’t you look up a nearby store? I can buy something to cover it up?" suggested Oliver.
Turning to him, Josefina remarked, "Seems you know quite a bit, Oliver."
