Jane was practically on the edge of her seat, her voice tinged with urgency. "Walter, you've got to help me with this antidote, pronto."
Alfie raised an eyebrow, his tone a mix of teasing and seriousness. "Don't you think you owe my star pupil an apology first?"
Jane was momentarily speechless. "Walter, are you seriously suggesting I apologize? I'm seventy, for crying out loud. Do I really have to bow to someone younger?"
"What, just because you're older, you think you get a free pass on manners?" Alfie shot back, genuinely curious.
Jane was filled with regret. If only she could turn back time, she wouldn't have landed herself in this mess.
"Walter, can't we skip the apology? Just do me this solid, will you?"
Alfie's expression turned stern. "If I let you off the hook, who’s going to stand up for Josie? Your pride matters, but hers doesn’t?"
Jane felt her blood pressure rising, almost boiling over.
Damn it!
Alfie frowned, clearly displeased. "Think it over. If you can't wrap your head around it, don't come crying to me."
As Alfie stood up to leave, Jane called out, pleading for him to sit back down.
"Let's talk this through. I'll apologize, okay? Just bring your student here, and I'll make it right."
Alfie scoffed. "You expect Josie to come to you? Jane, you really think highly of yourself."
Gritting her teeth and swallowing her anger, Jane retorted, "Then what do you suggest I do?"
"Throw a dinner party. Apologize to my student there."
Jane was taken aback.
"Think that's not enough? Fine, book an entire restaurant."
"Walter, I'm not fussing over the scale. But you know my health isn't great."
"It's not like you're staying for dinner. Apologize and leave; we’ll handle the eating. Is that so hard?" Alfie said, grinning.
Jane was livid.
"Of course. She's realized her mistake and wants to make amends properly."
Still, Josefina couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to it. Jane, with her pride, agreeing to such a thing?
"Josie, you don’t need to sweat the details. Just pick a restaurant you like, and I'll let Jane know. It's up to you whether you accept her apology."
"I get to choose?" Josefina was surprised.
"Absolutely. If you don't feel like accepting her apology, then don't."
Josefina chuckled, feeling like Jane had been outmaneuvered by her master.
After a moment, she said, "Since Master has gone through all this trouble, I'll forgive her. But if she starts anything again, I won't let it slide so easily."
"Josie, sorry you had to go through this."
"It's okay. I'm just glad I can finally be of help to Master."
Alfie's gaze softened as he looked at Josefina, filled with pride as if witnessing her coming of age.
