Marina glared at the woman wrapped up tightly in her coat, frustration bubbling over as she slapped at her. "You promised, didn't you? Just take a swing at Josefina, and you'd help me get Xavier back."
The woman shoved Marina, sending her sprawling onto the snowy pavement. "You said you'd handle Josefina. Yet, she’s untouched, not a hair out of place."
Seething, the woman gave Marina a swift kick. "I asked you to do one simple thing, and look at the mess you’ve made! Josefina’s perfectly fine, and you’re the one who’s all banged up."
Marina lay there, her heart in pieces. How had she ended up in this miserable state?
"Marina, you're finished." With that, the mysterious woman turned on her heel and left.
Marina sat on the cold ground, staring blankly, not moving an inch.
...
Meanwhile, Josefina headed to the club, where Luke was waiting to meet her. Inside his private booth, Luke leaned in, whispering, "Marina was definitely here. I saw a woman all bundled up walk in. I waited forever but she never came out. No idea what went down."
Josefina took a seat, trying to listen through the tiny bug Luke had planted on the door. "I can't hear anything," she said, pulling out the earpiece.
"Seriously?" Luke took the earpiece, listening himself. Nothing.
"I'll check it out," he said. Seeing Josefina would surely rattle Marina, but Luke, being a fresh face, might go unnoticed.
He opened the booth door, and through her phone, Josefina could see inside Marina’s booth. One look, and she gasped. Marina was there alone, hurling a stream of insults at Luke. Startled, Luke bolted, with Marina not giving chase, leaving instead with a heavy heart.
Seizing the chance, Josefina slipped into the booth, trying to figure out how two people went in, but only one came out.
Then Luke returned. "Boss, maybe that person sprouted wings and flew off."
