Chapter 104 1

Chapter 104-1

(Sabrina’s POV)

The simple wisdom in his words breaks something open in my chest. Because he’s right. God, he’s

so right.

Dustin’s coming back because he realized what he lost. It took losing us for him to appreciate

what he had.

But Ethan never had to lose me to value me. He saw my worth from the beginning.

“You’re a very smart boy,” I whisper, pulling Jake close again. “When did you get so wise?”

“I’m five and three-quarters. That’s basically ancient.” His voice holds a hint of his usual humor. “Besides, Aunt Sophia says I’m an old soul. Whatever that means.”

I laugh despite the tears streaming down my face. “It means you’re an amazing kid. So, so special.

“I know.” He pauses. “Mom? Are you gonna call Mr. Jason now?”

“Yes. Yes, I think I am.”

“Good. Because he looked really sad when he left. And I don’t like when Mr. Jason is sad. He’s supposed to smile and be happy and take us to get ice cream.”

I pull back to wipe my eyes. “You’re right. Mr. Jason should be happy. And I’m going to make sure he knows-“I pause. “He makes me happy. But first, we need to talk to your dad. I need to tell him-

“That you’re not getting back together with him.” Jake squeezes my hand. “I’ll tell him with you. So he knows it’s not just you. It’s me too. I don’t want him to take the place of your shiny shoe protector. Just as my dad who visits sometimes.”

My heart swells with pride and love and gratitude for this incredible child. “Are you sure, baby? You won’t regret this?”

“I’m sure.” He sounds so certain. “Bad dad made you cry a lot. Mr. Jason makes you laugh. I pick laughing.”

“I pick laughing too.”

We walk back to Dustin’s room together, hand in hand. And for the first time since the park, I feel clear. Certain.
