Chapter 104-2
Chapter 104-2
“You brat, how do you know what emotional blackmail means?”
“He’s my son. Of course, he’s just as smart and sharp as me.” I freeze at the sound of that voice, then turn to find Ethan standing at the door.
My heart skips a beat, and I take a step forward, but Jake beats me to the punch. He sprints across the room, shouting “Mr. Jason!” as he hurls himself at Ethan, who bends just in time to
catch him, and lifts him up.
His eyes find mine over Jake’s head, and the intensity there makes my breath catch.
He came back. He actually came back.
Relief floods through me so powerful my knees go weak. I have to grip the edge of Dustin’s bed to
stay upright.
Ethan crosses the room, carrying Jake, his presence filling the space in a way that makes everything feel right again. Stable. Safe.
He stops beside Dustin’s bed, his expression polite but cool. “How are you feeling?”
Dustin stares at them-at his son clinging to another man, at the easy affection between them, at how natural they look together.
And something in his face cracks. Just for a moment. A flash of pain so raw it’s almost physical before he buries it behind a neutral mask.
“Better.” His voice comes out rougher than usual. “Doctor says I’ll make a full recovery in no time.”
“That’s good to hear.” Ethan shifts Jake’s weight slightly. “I spoke to your medical team earlier. The knife missed all major organs. Once the wound heals and you complete physical therapy, you can be discharged.”
“That’s… good to know.” Dustin’s eyes keep drifting to Jake. To the way Jake’s relaxed completely in Ethan’s arms and is not even looking at him anymore
“I want to thank you.” Ethan’s voice softens slightly. “For what you did in the park. That took courage. And it saved Sabrina’s life.”
Dustin nods stiffly. “She’s Jake’s mother. I couldn’t let-“His voice breaks. He clears his throat. “I couldn’t let anything happen to her.”
“I understand.” Ethan’s hand finds my lower back. Possessive but gentle. “We’ll bring Jake to visit tomorrow. And if you need anything during your recovery, just ask the nurses. I’ve already arranged

for-”
“I don’t need your charity.” The words come out sharp. Defensive.

“It’s not charity. It’s gratitude. And ensuring Jake’s father recovers fully is my responsibility.” Ethan’s voice remains even. Professional. “Jake deserves to have you in his life. Just not in the way you,
were hoping.”
The implication hangs in the air. Clear. Undeniable.
Dustin’s jaw clenches. “And what way is that?”
“As his father. Not as Sabrina’s husband. That position’s already filled.”
The bluntness of it makes me wince. But Ethan doesn’t mince his words. And maybe Dustin needs to hear it stated plainly instead of dancing around the truth to give up and move on.
Because the ship he’s waiting for has already sailed.
“Ethan-” I start, but he gently rubs my back.
“We should go. Jake needs dinner and it’s been a long day.” He looks at Dustin one more time. “Heal up. We’ll see you tomorrow.”
