Chapter 131
(Kate’s POV)
I go downstairs to receive them.
Play the gracious hostess. The welcoming grandmother. The woman who’s accepted this union.
Outwardly, at least.
Because I’ve decided: I need to know more. Need to see Sabrina in her element. Watch how she handles pressure. Test whether she’s truly strong enough for this world or whether she’ll crack like
I fear.
During lunch, I watch her.
The way she engages in conversation-thoughtful, articulate, not trying to impress but not shrinking either.
The way she handles Rosalie.
Because I see it. The way Sabrina’s eyes track Rosalie when Rosalie touches Ethan’s arm. The way something shifts in Sabrina’s expression when Rosalie laughs at one of Ethan’s jokes.
She knows.
Somehow, she’s figured out what Rosalie wants. What Rosalie’s doing.
And she’s not reacting.
Smart.
I hope this means she has a plan in mind, a way to deal with Rosalie without creating a scene.
After lunch, when Sabrina suggests I give the tour instead of Rosalie, I see Rosalie’s face. The flash of anger quickly covered. The forced smile.
I accept Sabrina’s request. Lead them through the grounds.
!
And notice something odd.
Jake. The six-year-old with his sketchbook and his phone. He’s always just behind me. Or beside me. Or somewhere in my peripheral vision.
Drawing. Recording. Documenting everything.
At first I think it’s childish curiosity. The estate is impressive. Of course he’d want to capture it.
But then I notice the pattern.
O
Chapter 131
He’s not just drawing the estate. Or drawing people.
He’s specifically recording moments. Conversations.
(Jake’s POV)
I’ve been following Granny Kate for two whole days now.
Not in a creepy way. In a research way. There’s a difference.
Scientists follow animals to understand them. Detectives follow suspects to learn the truth. Any I’m following Granny Kate because something doesn’t add up.
Mean people don’t put drawings in places of honor. Mean people don’t look sad when they think nobody’s watching. Mean people don’t call you “dear” even when they’re trying to be tough.
So either Granny Kate isn’t mean, or she’s really bad at it.
My tablet is propped against the water fountain at the hospital. The screen shows a game-one of those building games where you make cities-but the camera is actually recording.
Granny Kate is three benches away. She doesn’t know I’m here. I heard her talking on the phone at the estate today, and knew she would be here. Mom thinks I’m with Aunt Sophia at the library.
I am with Aunt Sophia. Just not at the library.
“Jake,” Aunt Sophia whispers. She’s sitting next to me, pretending to read a magazine. “This feels wrong. We’re spying on an old woman.”
“We’re not spying. We’re documenting.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No, it’s not. Spying is when you’re trying to catch someone doing something bad. Documenting is when you’re trying to show the truth to the world.”
Documenting. This is important work. It’s what real journalists do. They find the truth and show it to people.
I learned that from a video about this man named Walter Cronkite. He was a journalist and everyone trusted him because he showed the truth.
And that’s what I’m doing right now.
Aunt Sophia looks at me like she’s trying to decide if I’m brilliant or weird. She does that a lot.
“Fine. Documenting. What are we documenting exactly?”
“Watch.”

Granny Kate stands up. She’s holding two big bags. The kind with toys in them. I can see teddy bears and coloring books peeking out the top.
She walks to the children’s ward entrance. Talks to the nurse. Hands over the bags.
he nurse’s face lights up. She tries to thank Granny Kate but Granny Kate waves her hand like
‘s disgusted. But when she turns away, I see her lip quirk up for a bit, before turning to the firm –
rd line.
y tablet catches all of it.
Did you see?” I whisper to Aunt Sophia.
“I saw.”
“Granny isn’t mean. She also doesn’t look down on people. She just doesn’t want people to know
she cares.”
Aunt Sophia doesn’t argue.
Day three of Project Granny Kate.
I’m in the community garden near the Hale Estate. There’s a bench here where I can sit with my
sketchbook.
My tablet is in my backpack. Propped up against the side so the camera can see out.
Granny Kate appears at exactly 3:15. I timed it yesterday-she comes here every afternoon.
She’s with an old lady I don’t know. The old lady is walking really slow, using a cane. Carrying grocery bags that look too heavy for her.
Granny Kate takes the bags. Says something that makes the old lady laugh. Then she walks with her all the way to the little house at the end of the garden path.
She doesn’t just hand the bags over. She goes inside. Stays for twenty minutes.
